If your cat has been diagnosed with lymphoma, or you're just curious about what that means, we wanted to share a bit of context, because lymphoma isn't just one single disease.

The most common form we see in cats is called low-grade alimentary lymphoma, which affects the digestive tract. It's typically treated with an oral medication combination, and many cats respond well and can have a good quality of life for a long stretch of time with this treatment.

Other, less common forms of lymphoma in cats can behave more aggressively and are harder to manage. This is part of why an accurate diagnosis matters so much, because the specific type of lymphoma really does affect what we recommend and what to expect.

You may have heard us mention the melanoma vaccine, Oncept, and wanted to share a bit more about what it actually is and how it helps dogs.

Oncept is a vaccine used for dogs with oral melanoma, a type of cancer that shows up in the mouth. Rather than treating the tumor directly, it works with your dog's immune system, helping your pet's own body recognize and respond to the cancer cells. It's typically used alongside other treatments, not to replacement for them.

It's given a little differently than a typical vaccine. Instead of a needle, we use a needle-free device that delivers it just under the skin, which most dogs tolerate really well. The initial series is a few doses spaced a couple of weeks apart, and after that, dogs come in for a booster every six months to keep that immune response going.

Oncept has been around for years now and has made a difference for a lot of dogs facing this diagnosis. If your dog has been diagnosed with oral melanoma, we're happy to talk through whether this could be part of their care plan.

Jett Stream came to Veterinary Cancer Care after being diagnosed with oral melanoma. He’s now in clinical remission, meaning we can’t find any evidence of cancer!

Jett is currently on his fourth treatment with Gilvetmab, an immunotherapy treatment that helps Jett's own immune system recognize and respond to cancer cells before they can multiply! He's also received the Oncept vaccine, which is designed specifically to target melanoma.

This sweet man is living it up in his home in Colorado. His family has been soaking up every moment with him, including regular trips to his favorite restaurants around Santa Fe Plaza (we hear he has excellent taste).

The word "electrochemotherapy" sounds intense, but it's a lot gentler than it sounds.

This treatment combines a low dose of chemotherapy with brief, painless electrical pulses. The pulses simply help the treatment get into the tumor cells more effectively, so we can often use a much smaller dose than a typical chemotherapy treatment would need. Your pet is fully sedated or under light anesthesia during the procedure, so there's no discomfort involved.

It's most often used for tumors on the skin or just beneath it, and for many smaller tumors, it can be done as a single treatment. It's been used in veterinary medicine for years and is considered a standard option for these kinds of tumors, not something new or experimental.

This is Kai, one of our clinic dogs and a very important member of the Veterinary Cancer Care team.

Kai's job description is simple: greet every person who walks into our lobby, and sit with patients who need a little extra comfort when they're feeling anxious. He takes both very seriously.

His only crime around here is sneaking treats off the front desk, but honestly, we consider that his paycheck. That, and his plush dog bed in the office, which is very much his and no one else's.

Cryosurgery uses extremely cold temperatures to destroy abnormal tissue and may be recommended for small external masses, superficial tumors, or tumors in difficult locations. In some cases, it can be performed using only a local anesthetic, allowing treatment without general anesthesia or sedation.
