Meet Baby Blue – the husky adolescent. Baby Blue arrived to the Shelter as an owner surrender after his previous guardian was unable to continue caring for him. He is an energetic, engaging guy who has been interested in being friends with just about everyone since his arrival at the Shelter. Typical to a pup his age, he pulls excitedly on leash and is ready to go out for an adventure. Adopters should ensure they are prepared to take on the needs of an intelligent, high energy dog as he will require above average mental and physical stimulation in the day to day. Baby Blue has met a female husky around the same age and size and enjoyed playing with her. A canine friend in his adoptive home may be a fit after a meet ‘n greet at the Shelter. We do not have any history of Baby Blue with cats or children.

The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw!

The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter is open to the public from 11am to 6pm every day (except county holidays) and located at 1001 Rodriguez Street at the corner of 7th Avenue in Santa Cruz, CA. Our telephone number is 831-454-7200. Last meet and greet ends at 4:30 pm. Visit our website at scanimalshelter.org or click on link in Bio.

Adopt Phoenix the kitten!

Meet Phoenix, a stunning flame-point Siamese whose journey from a terrified stray to a loving companion proves just how transformative a little patience can be. When Phoenix arrived at the shelter two weeks ago, she was defensive, hissing, and hiding from anyone who tried to reach her. Thanks to a couple of weeks with an experienced foster family, she has completely turned a corner. By the end of her visit, she would occasionally seek out the humans she trusted and leap right into their laps for instant, rumbling purrs. True to her Siamese roots, she is wonderfully vocal and playful, balancing high-energy toy chases with cozy loafing sessions. While she can still be a bit elusive when first approached, her lightning-fast progress in foster care proves she is ready to blossom in the right forever home. Phoenix would thrive best in a household with confident older cats to show her the ropes, having already done well with the feline mentors in her foster home. If you are a patient adopter looking for an intelligent, talkative, and fiercely affectionate companion who will reward your understanding with a lifetime of loyalty, Phoenix is ready to rise into your heart.

Meet Jax - our Pet of the Week🐶🐾❤️

Jax is a 3-year-old black-and-white Tibetan Terrier who was surrendered due to conflict with another dog in his previous home. At the shelter, he has proven to be incredibly social with people. He loves going for walks, playing in the yard, and is generally a sweet, easygoing guy. While he has been fairly neutral during dog introductions in our care, our staff recommends he be the only dog in the home to ensure his long-term success. He likely wouldn’t enjoy dog parks or busy beaches, so a home where he can be the absolute apple of your eye without any competition is the perfect fit.

Tibetan Terriers are known for being highly intelligent and forming strong, loyal bonds with their owners. They also have a low-shedding coat that can be a great choice for people with allergies. However, because they have a double coat, Jax will require frequent brushing alongside regular baths and grooming.

As “independent thinkers,” Tibetans can sometimes show a stubborn streak. Fortunately, with consistency and positive training, they make wonderful companions! Jax has been a total sweetheart with our volunteers and staff, and we know he will be an amazing addition to a committed family.

To help you get started, the shelter is offering a $200 Pawsitivity Bucks voucher with his adoption, making it even easier to take that first step toward bonding with Jax!
