"The biggest thing for the kids is writing profiles of the animals for the shelter website, said SPCA Education Coordinator Brenna Ewing.

"They love that because they get to help animals find a home. A lot of them get attached even though it's only for five days."

This program is Kids Speak for Pets and it is a Growing Kinder/SCCAS program. We are glad to be working with the Campers to help find the pets homes!

SANTA CRUZ -- A dozen people filed into the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter on Thursday afternoon, browsing the kennels, looking for a potential friend.

Lily's Foster says, "I believe that she is mostly Jack Russell as she has the traits of the Jack Russell that I had for 14 years. She is a well behaved and well adjusted little companion. She is cohabiting with an 85 # yellow lab, 2 cats and a family of 4. She loves to sleep curled up in her bed on the couch, nestled under a little blanket when she is not rallying for a walk in the woods. She is a great trail walker in the woods off leash as well as a good leash walker in busier environments. She loves to go on car rides but tends to bark a lot when left alone in the car. She also snoops around the car to find food when left alone in the car. She is a bit of a food beggar when we are eating or cooking. We are working on changing that behavior and she is very receptive. She hangs out with me when I’m outside working in the garden and comes when I call her. She is a little shy around men but warms up to them eventually. She loves sitting on my lap or curling up beside me under a blanket. She sleeps in a soft bed with a blanket on the floor beside my bed although she would be just as happy under the covers in my bed."

From her foster:

Regarding Patty Cake.... I miss her!!!

I brought Patty Cake home for a two night stay. What a different dog out of the shelter. I literally did not hear her bark for 48 hours; just cute little grunts and purrs. My housemate wondered if she had a bark!!! She is such a snuggle bug; curled up with me at night time; sat in my lap by day as I worked on the computer. Unaffected by my 15 pound cat. They had a nose to nose meeting early on, by the evening they shared a couch together. At night PC, my chi mix dog, and my cat all figured out how to share my bed. She met a friends 70 # pit mix and they figured out how share a couch together in no time. She probably needs a little bit of help and patience with potty habits, but learned from my house trained girl quickly. I wish I could take on another bitty dog!!! She is a peach!
