During the recent Riverside County fires, Riverside County Animal Services faced increasing pressure caring for animals already in their shelters while preparing for evacuees and emergency needs. While much of the emergency request for help focused on large dog transfers, many cats and kittens still needed safe pathways, specialized care, and a place to go โ and thatโs where ASAP Cats quietly stepped in.
Through a mutual aid request, ASAP welcomed a large group of cats and kittens from Coachella Valley Animal Campus this holiday weekend. Many arrived needing immediate support, including sick kittens, neonatal babies, nursing mamas, and vulnerable teens.
A huge thank you to Gina and Katie, who volunteered their entire Sunday to make the long drive and safely transport these cats to Santa Barbara. They were met by our incredible Sunday volunteers, Wellness team, fosters, Executive Director and staff who jumped into action to triage, medicate, clean, coordinate foster placements, and provide comfort and care.
Because of our amazing foster network, most of these cats and kittens are already safe in foster homes recovering, growing, and beginning the next chapter of their lives.
We also want our Santa Barbara community to know this: whether itโs a daily crisis or a large-scale disaster, ASAP Cats plans, trains, and prepares for emergencies so that when cats and families need support, we are ready to respond here at home while also supporting our rescue partners when we are able.
Now WE need your help.
Emergency responses like this create immediate costs for medical care, vaccines, formula, food, litter, and spay/neuter surgeries. We are also urgently looking for additional fosters, especially for kittens, nursing families, and cats needing medication or recovery support.
