A very personal post today: This is something that is super hard for me to talk about but I want to share my story so people out there with similar stuggles know they’re not alone. I gained an exponential amount of weight in vet school; an amount that doesn’t even feel like it’s possible. And while I have lost some weight here and there it still hasn’t amounted to the drastic difference between the start and end of school. It’s been 2 years since I graduated and the biggest reason why I haven’t been able to shake this is lack of stability. As a vet you skip lunches, and dinner sometimes because you have to eat when you can. You might be on call, you might be at the clinic 10 days in a row, or up all hours of the night with a patient. I finally feel like I have a stable schedule, enough so that I can start to develop a routine of good habits that will help my health long term. I am determined to get back to a healthier weight, and I really would like to do as much as I can with just a good routine and no medications. So here is my post for anyone struggling with seeing the small steps towards a seemingly insurmountable goal: you got this. Even if you are going slower than the pace you see others go, even if you are getting passed by colleagues. Any step forward is progress. Progress over perfection. 🔥🩺🐎🏔️

When I think of teamwork I think of Navicular Bursa Injections. 🤣 Be a positive and uplifting force for your team! Teach them how to be more efficient and train them so they are always learning new skills. Surround yourself with people who strive to improve themselves and those around them. 🐎🩺🏔️

This is your sign to get out there and get yourself your next opportunity! I can’t get over how many people I meet who expect opportunities to be handed to them; people who never advance in their careers because they aren’t willing to go out and get what they want. If you want something go out there and get it! The worst that can happen is they say no and you move on to the next! In the past 10 years of my life I have never settled. I continued to pursue opportunities until I was where I wanted to be. No equine vets will hire me as an undergrad? Fine I’ll be a small animal technician to get my vet hours. They won’t pay me to work at the equine hospital? Fine I’ll volunteer in my spare time until they don’t have a reason to say no. That’s how I started my career and made a space for myself in equine veterinary medicine, even when people continually told me that people who didn’t grow up owning horses aren’t successful in this field. So let that be your motivation of the day!

Tooth Extractions are one of my FAVORITE things to do as an equine veterinarian. It is always good knowing that we are taking an uncomfortable mouth and relieving them of any pain and discomfort they may be having! The main reasons I recommend tooth extractions are when there are mobile teeth, tooth root abscesses and fractured teeth. Once we remove these teeth, the horse can go back to eating and digesting comfortably. Without extractions, improper mastication can lead to issues such as choke or impaction colic! Proper dental care is key! 🦷🐎🩺🏔️
