Why skipping new foal exams can be deadly….
Below you will see two IgG tests and both were “normal acting” foals. The one on the left is definite failure of passive transfer (no bottom dot at all) versus on the right (darkest dot at the bottom) is what you want to see. Not every sick foal looks sick right away and there is only a small window of time to do life saving treatments. Get your foal checked out within 24hrs of birth!⏰

A ‘sheath cleaning’ should always go beyond the sheath. Simply cleaning the sheath can leave the real problems behind such as large beans (shown below) or even masses on the genitalia that need further investigation. These potential problems can not always be seen with the naked eye. As a veterinarian, I am able to sedate for full visualization and examination of the entire area. It’s also an important time to discuss any abnormal urinary behaviors.
A sheath cleaning should be thorough and performed on an annual basis (some cases more often).🧼🐴

Not sure why but I always get a little sentimental when it’s time to retire a pair of work boots. Maybe it’s all the animals they’ve seen (and questionable stains), the gates climbed, or times I should’ve put my muck boots on but was too stubborn. I do know I’m grateful to lace up a new pair and keep at it 🥾

🩸Blood work is more than just sending it off to the lab and waiting for numbers. Analysis starts right away. The purple top tube is used to collect plasma and the yellow top tube is used to collect serum. In both samples, the separated portion should be yellow but clear and easy to see through. The thickened white/yellow portion in both is not normal and indicates excessive triglycerides (fat) being immobilized Into the blood. Just one very small but important start to the puzzle.🧐🧪
