Your old horse is not just an old horse…
I think we have developed a bad habit of using the excuse of age to explain an older horses conditions or state of well being. We have become accustomed to allowing a certain appearance or health status because they are a certain age. Age is just a number, not a disease.

From my personal and veterinary standpoint, every age of horse (or other species) still deserves care. While there are some expected changes with increasing age, this does not mean “because they are old” explains everything. Old horses don’t have to be emaciated and thin, have bad teeth, crippling pain or overall a decreased quality of life that is acceptable. Please do not fall into the habit of allowing your older horse to slip through the cracks. I believe horse owners (and other species) are responsible no matter the age or when that last day comes. This time of year is very hard as I am saying more goodbyes to patients than I am welcoming new ones. Please continue to care and advocate for your older animals.

Their age does not define their worth.

What does it mean to be a rural large animal vet:
-It’s working in all seasons and all weather conditions
-It’s staying an extra hour to help the farmers newborn calf nurse
-It’s praying with the family who is saying goodbye to a lifelong pet
-It’s hopping fence to avoid the mad angus cow
-It’s days where bringing new life into the world and ending suffering happen concurrently
-It’s performing c-sections when your instruments freeze to your hands
-It’s spending an extra 15 minutes talking with the farmer about the ‘good ole days’
-It’s having every type of clothing in your truck because it’s 50 degrees in the morning and 80 degrees midday
-It’s not knowing if you’ll have electricity or water access or even a barn to work in
-Its getting home and unsure what that smell is or stain on your clothes
-It’s laying awake at night hoping the horse you’ve treated for 3 days makes it
-It’s celebrating the wins, no matter how small

Is the job glamorous? Not often
Is the job hard? Yes
Is the job worth doing? Absolutely

🐎Horses: dental checks, fall vaccines, deworming consults, QOL discussions for older animals going into winter
🐄Cattle: pregnancy checks for spring/summer calvings, vaccine boosters, dehorning/castrating (to avoid heat and flies)
🐐Goat/sheep: health exams, vaccines, deworming consults, castrations
🐖Pigs: vaccines, herd health, castrations
And anything else in between!

Dr. Simpkins is the sole veterinarian and business owner. Every daytime and nighttime call is managed by her. Her typical day to day includes scheduled appointments, phone call consultations, submitting and interpreting labs and bloodwork, writing diagnostic reports, ordering supplies, stocking her truck, medical records, and of course emergencies. She’s also strictly mobile which means catching lots of sunrises and sunsets🚘🌅
