🐄Cattle: pregnancy checks for spring/summer calvings, vaccine boosters, dehorning/castrating (to avoid heat and flies)
🐐Goat/sheep: health exams, vaccines, deworming consults, castrations
🐖Pigs: vaccines, herd health, castrations
And anything else in between!

Farm-Stock Vet is dedicated to large animals only (horses, cattle, goats, sheep, pigs, alpacas, llamas). We do provide in home euthanasia for small animal but no other small animal services (including emergencies) are offered. Please maintain your current small animal veterinary relationships.

Cows are so amazing!!🐮
No, I’m not listening for the ocean in this picture but the sound I’m listening for is a key part of this surgery. This cow had an LDA (left displaced abomasum). The surgery is performed on the right side and the abomasum has migrated from its normal position (right side), becomes gas distended and trapped on the left side. The tube I’m listening through has a needle on the end of it that I guide guarded but somewhat blindly to the other side to relieve the gas. Abomasal gas not only has a distinct noise but a very distinct smell that ensures I’m in the right place. Then the abomasum is then guided back to the correct position and tacked permanently in place. All of this is done using sterile instruments and technique but yes the cow is completely awake and standing. She is given local anesthetic and doesn’t feel a thing. Most get instant relief and walk happily over to feed once complete.🐄🩺

🩺The importance of every part of a physical exam on any animal…
Sometimes we get asked “can’t you just tell me what it is without an exam.” Answer will always be no and here’s why. Without a proper exam, we are not doing justice to any animal. Veterinary medicine is not about guessing but using years of training, education, and medical investigation to figure out what is going on. Unfortunately in this case (left image) I knew from one simple part of my exam we were in trouble. This horse has what we call a “toxic line” (very dark purple line above teeth & gums have purple hue.) There are several reasons in which this can happen but often comes with the same grave prognosis. From then on in my exam, the pieces come together one by one and then maybe we can make a diagnosis. But, we are also trained to recognize more simple things that tell us all we need to know and when situations shift from “just not acting right” to “death is coming.” The horse on the right depicts what normal gum color should look like. The horse on the left was humanely euthanized.

In my opinion, every animal deserves a full exam no matter what we “think” is going on.
