I first saw "Feral Fern" at Clyde's Dock Dogs competition summer of 2025. So me being me I went over and introduced myself. Her "pop" is what influenced that! I of course had to be nosey. They didn't have a practice place and just giving it a whirl that day... I said " no,no,no you need to come to Premier Dog Sports & Event Center, LLC ". Last year she was jumping 12-13 feet. Now she jumps BIG with a PB of 23 feet! Thanks Molly Wrobel for letting me throw for her! I love seeing the newbies succeed and have fun doing so!

Some believe that if you breed a dam with excellent hips to a male with excellent hips then no offspring will have hip dysplasia. Same for elbow dysplasia.

WRONG !!!!!

Unfortunately every breeding we do is a genetic experiment.

You have Two types of influences

Understanding these terms is crucial in genetics.

🧬 Genotype — the specific genetic makeup inherited from its parents.

🧬Phenotype — the observable characteristics; which can include physical appearance and behavior and environment.

For instance = your dog is allowed to jump off furniture as a puppy and ends up hurting its right back leg. Then at age 2 you take your dog for X-rays for evaluation of hips because you may want to breed him or her. The dog unfortunately fails on the right hip but passes on the left hip. This can be concluded as a phenotype cause.

I also found an interesting study that Purina did in 2006 that shows a feeding experiment with puppies. They are followed for 13 years and it showed the amount of food consumption plays a huge role in results.

Half of the puppies were food restricted by 25% and kept lean and only 10% had hip dysplasia. The others half were fed normally and 50% developed dysplasia by the age of 6 some starting at age 6months. Which shows phenotype plays a huge role in the results.

The results showed genotype - which is hereditary from parents is only 15-40%. While environmental is up to 60% caused.

As breeders we can only make sure we are doing our due diligence and testing our breeding program. But ultimately 60% is on you as the owner to make sure you are doing your part as well.

Below is a chart of percentage for each breeding pairs.

Bottle feeding is tedious. It's time consuming. It's expensive. Frankie still hasn't quite got the milk supply. She goes in and lays with them. BUT I'm still on duty. The bond you have with the bottle fed babies is like no other. They love me. They look to me like I am their momma. Which at this point, I've accepted the role. Only a few more days until we start mush 🙏
