For anyone considering traveling into Mexico with their pets. Although New World Screwworms have been found only in Texas, the new rules for screening pets before travel into Mexico apply for the entire border.

Starting August 3, pet dogs and birds traveling to Mexico will need new inspection certificates due to New World screwworm detections in the U.S., though, pet cats remain exempt. The requirement follows Mexico's broader restrictions on U.S. livestock and other species imports since June.

The New World Screwworm problems in Texas are now effecting the entire border. Dogs and other animals will not be allowed to enter Mexico from anywhere in the US until the problem is under better control. Dogs currently in Mexico have to go through special screwworm screening prior to coming back in to the US. The USDA is not being extremely clear on the rules right now, so it is best to keep your pet on this side of the border for the time being.

This page will guide you through the rules and requirements for traveling from the United States to Mexico with your pet.

We have a Frenchie in need of a home. 18 month old neutered male. He’s very sweet with people. Loves to cuddle. He does need to be in a home by himself. He doesn’t love to cuddle anyone other than people. Please respond here or call the clinic if you’re interested or have questions.

Please don’t feed raw meat to any pet, especially cats. There are multiple cases across the country of cats dying of Avian Influenza, almost all from being fed raw meat. It was always a bad idea, this makes it even worse.

An house cat in East County that died last month represents the first case of bird flu found in a cat countywide, local health officials said.

A reminder as to why it is important to vaccinate cats and dogs for rabies. It is present in our bat population in San Diego county. We are lucky that it is very rare in species that are carriers in other parts of the country such as raccoons, skunks, coyotes, and foxes. We have had two clients find rabies positive bats inside their homes, showing the need to vaccinate cats even when they never go outside.

An invasive fungus that has killed millions of bats may be present in San Diego County, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife announced Monday.

For anyone that travels with their dogs to Tijuana or further into Mexico, the rules for doing so are about to change drastically. The CDC has implemented rules for restriction of dogs from high-risk rabies countries for good reason. Unfortunately, these rules also require USDA endorsed rabies or health certificates for dogs returning from Mexico or Canada, even for just a day trip. These will have to be obtained days prior to travel and require a physical examination of the dog and verification of microchip and vaccination. The bottom line is that dogs without appropriate paperwork can be refused entry back into the US after August 1st. If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Young for further information.

Is your canine patient entering the United States? Soon they’ll need more than just a health certificate. Here’s what you need to know.
