🐎𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐍𝐎𝐓 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐮𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠’𝐬 (𝐏𝐏𝐈𝐃) 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐨𝐚𝐭?
When most owners think of Cushing's (PPID) in horses, they think of a long, dull haircoat, that doesn’t shed well, as the key sign. While this is a strong indicator that your horse should be tested, this is unfortunately a sign of more advanced disease. Some other signs you might see are:

Some of the best practices when trying to prevent sand colic include:
✅ Feeding your horse on rubber mats that are swept off regularly
✅ Horses on dry lot should be fed small meals more often and consider using a slow feeder to extend meals
✅ Rotate pastures so they do not become overgrazed (too short, dry, and patchy)

😣𝐃𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐢𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐞?
It's important to recognize signs that your horse may have a build up of sand (ground debris) in their stomach and GI tract. By recognizing it early we hope to avoid a full sand colic episode in your horse. Horses with a large sand burden risk impaction and even blockage that can require surgical intervention.

Sand colic is caused by the ingestion of sand, dirt, DG, and other similar matter. The build up of this matter causes painful irritation and inflammation in the digestive system which leads to colic including diarrhea and sometimes even fever. This build up can also become so great that it causes actual impaction which can require surgical intervention😢

𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐞:�☑️ Horses fed directly on the ground without mats covering the ground (ingest dirt and sand with their hay)
