City Farm SLO

City Farm SLO Our mission is to advance community well-being and the common good by fostering connection to food and the land at San Luis Obispo’s urban farm.

City Farm SLO provides small farmers with affordable land and services to enable sustainable crop production, educates SLO County youth with farm-based programming, models innovative agricultural practices, and fosters an engaged community of people who have an appreciation for the agricultural heritage of our region and an affinity for agricultural recreation.

🌱 There’s something so deeply inspiring about a woman who gets her hands in the soil and builds something beautiful for her community.
Meet Kayla Rutland, Executive Director of City Farm SLO in San Luis Obispo, California — a vibrant woman-led urban farm doing extraordinary work. In this International Year of the Woman Farmer, Kayla and her team embody the heart of what we celebrate at Womanswork: growing fresh, nourishing produce for their community and hosting joyful events that bring people together around the land.
We’re thrilled to support them and share their story. We believe in lifting up the women who feed us — in every sense of the word. 💛
Thank you, Kayla, for letting us share a glimpse of your beautiful farm.

Introducing the Rooted in SLO Award.

This is the very first time we've given this honor, and 2026 is the United Nations' International Year of the Woman Farmer, so our first Rooted in SLO award celebrates a woman or nonbinary leader who has helped grow a healthier, more connected SLO County through farming, food, and education.

Women are 38% of California's farmers in a field that's still mostly men, and City Farm SLO is proud to be a female-led farm in that shift. This is the year to lift up the people doing this work right alongside us.

Nominees join us as celebrated guests at our 2nd Annual Farm Games Hoedown, Saturday, August 15 at Rancho Toro y Oso in San Luis Obispo, 5:00 to 8:30 PM.

How it works: reach out and we'll send you the full nomination details. Nominations include a discounted Nominee Guest Ticket ($75) so your honoree can join the celebration as our guest, with the person or group nominating them recognized for championing them.

🌟 What it feels like to realize a vision four years in the making! 🌟 This structure is the result of a long, sometimes dramatic, effort that started in 2022. This is where food moves from the field into the community—washed, packed, and prepared for families, schools, and our farm stand. It will allow us to scale production, maintain quality, and actually get more local food into people’s hands. It also allows more space for our education programs to expand—we aren’t washing and packing vegetables in our outdoor classroom anymore!

SINCERE GRATITUDE to our funders for this project: California Department of Food and Agriculture , the folks at AgWest Farm Credit , and the generous individual donors who helped build this new hub for our farm community.

This structure took four years of work and a very dedicated team working through ups and downs and the challenges involved in pulling this off just *days* away from our grant deadline. A huge thanks to the folks that worked on this project:

Rachel Kovesdi at Kovesdi Consulting who donated her time and expertise
Andrew Goodwin and Bryan Shields at Andrew Goodwin Designs
Dan at Hive Engineering
Stacey and Halil at
My team of staff at City Farm SLO

Now, we’re dedicating this pavilion in honor of Steven and Jan Marx as a small token of appreciation for what they have done to make City Farm SLO what it is today. We could not be more grateful for their more than 15 years of commitment to City Farm SLO. .marx

Not only do our sheep and lambs provide us with wool, meat, sustainable grazing and regenerative compost, but there is never a shortage of entertainment on the farm with these little lambs around!

Thank you Steven Marx for the video and selecting the perfect soundtrack

Farms Together, also known as the LFPA, is a critical program that has quietly been nourishing our community.

Act now to save small farmers in California! 🌱 🍓 🍊

We need the state of California to fund LFPA, a program that has provided immense support to small farmers.

California lost 10% of its farms between 2017–2022. Programs like LFPA are how we fight back — but only if the state funds them. Without these programs, we risk losing farmers throughout the state. Help keep local farmers by urging your state representatives to fund LFPA!

What is LFPA?

The Local Food Purchasing Assistance Program (LFPA) connects small farmers with food banks to provide healthy, fresh, and local food to California families in need while opening up access to a fair market for local food.

From bok choy and chiles to peaches and tomatoes, these farm boxes reflect the diversity of the people who grow and receive them — food that nourishes and honors community.
Take action 🫵 Call your state rep and urge them to fund LFPA and CUSP. Script and instructions in the carousel!
