I love my flat-face dog clients, but I always worry about their health, especially on hot days!

Repost from The Happy Broadcast

New figures from the UK Royal Kennel Club show that the popularity of flat-faced dog breeds is falling, with registrations of French bulldogs, bulldogs, and pugs dropping by 37%, 34%, and 43% respectively in early 2026. Veterinarians and animal welfare groups say the trend reflects growing public awareness of the serious health problems these breeds often face, including breathing difficulties and spinal disorders.

Experts from the Royal Veterinary College and the British Veterinary Association welcomed the decline, calling it a positive sign that years of education campaigns are encouraging people to prioritize health over appearance when choosing a dog.

While many flat-faced dogs are still bred outside official registration systems, researchers say the shift is an encouraging step toward improving animal welfare and reducing the demand for breeds with preventable health issues.

Indigo has gone from being kind of a “wild child” to a well-behaved companion. We enjoyed walking down Lincoln Avenue in downtown Willow Glen with him on our appointment last week. At this point, we need to make sure that his people are clear and consistent about their cues and the meanings of them, and that his responses to those cues are reliable even when we lower the value and increase the variability of his rewards.

Repost from Ivy League Dogs - good advice, and in my case a chance to practice my French! 😉🇫🇷

One of the most common pieces of dog advice is also one of the most misunderstood.

“Let them sniff your hand first.”
It sounds respectful. But for many dogs, a hand moving toward their face isn’t an invitation; it’s pressure.

Dogs have an extraordinary sense of smell. They don’t need your hand inches from their nose to gather information about you. If they’re interested, they’ll approach on their own.

The best way to greet an unfamiliar dog is often to do less:
✔️ Stand still.
✔️ Turn slightly sideways.
✔️ Keep your hands to yourself.
✔️ Let the dog choose whether they want to interact.

Choice builds trust. Pressure doesn’t.

Not every dog wants to meet you, and that’s perfectly okay.

Have you ever been told to put your hand out for a dog to sniff?

//

Raising a polite dog challenging and it can film overwhelming, but you don’t have to do it alone 🫶🏼

CoCo is just what you might expect in a Lab - an enthusiastic lover of all new people! She tends to jump, though, and in an adult dog this is no longer quite so cute. We’re going to try to teach her some impulse control!

Today's helpful product/hack for Management Monday is this nifty bottle and bowl combo, to help keep your dog hydrated when you're on the go. One thing I like about it is that you can pour the water your dog pup doesn't drink back into the bottle.

You can learn more about it and order one today at https://amzn.to/3TNkv7D (note that this is an affiliate link - no extra cost to you)

What is Management Monday about? A big part of making sure that your dogs behave the way you want is to set up their environment to allow or encourage certain behaviors, and to prevent or discourage others. In dog training, this is called "management", in that you manage the situation to induce the behavior you want to see (which you can then reward!). On Management Mondays I want to highlight equipment, tools, products and hacks you can use to help guide your dogs' behavior.

Wayne gets mouthy when frustrated and over-excited when meeting new people - we’ll see how he does when I meet him for real, instead of through a Zoom screen, this week!

No music with this post, because apparently Instagram doesn’t have the option of either “Wayne’s World” or any song by Fountains of Wayne.
