Fuzzy screenshots of a fuzzy dog - this is Sierra, a golden retriever who actually doesn’t seem to like to retrieve. This is probably more common than most people think; most dogs are happy to chase after a ball but mostly like the part where they get to HAVE the ball; in addition, many dogs prefer to play keep-away, which I love playing with dogs – with rules!

This morning I attended a Research Bites webinar that focused on what we can learn about canine cognition through studying their sense of smell. We looked at whether dogs could demonstrate self recognition through smell (inconclusive) and whether dogs might form a mental visual image of a known person based on that person's smell.

One thing that the seminar leader, Kristina Spaulding of Science Matters Academy of Animal Behavior LLC, went over was some of the things that we know that dogs can differentiate through smell, including these items: kinship, species, predator/prey, health status, and s*x (gender). Fascinating!

Today’s Training Tip Tuesday is all about the upcoming “fireworks season”! Did I say “upcoming”? Well in my neighborhood we’re hearing a few booms and bangs almost every night (despite the fact that they’re illegal, and we’re already in fire season….). And I personally suspect that this year is only going to get worse, as people express pent up worries, defy restrictions, and celebrate their patriotism. If you haven’t already, it’s time to start preparing your dog NOW.

Management Monday!

Today's helpful product is dog sunscreen - you don't want your pet to get sunburn (or skin cancer) while enjoying long summer days. Short-haired dogs, and dogs with lighter-colored skin (especially on their noses, around their eyes, and ears) are more susceptible to sunburn. Dog sunscreen is formulated to be safe if the dog licks and ingests it.

You can learn more about it and order one today at https://amzn.to/4vtW2Sq (note that this is an affiliate link - no extra cost to you)

What is Management Monday about? A big part of making sure that your dogs behave the way you want is to set up their environment to allow or encourage certain behaviors, and to prevent or discourage others. In dog training, this is called "management", in that you manage the situation to induce the behavior you want to see (which you can then reward!). On Management Mondays I want to highlight equipment, tools, products and hacks you can use to help guide your dogs' behavior.

Here’s Andy saying “What’s the big deal?” in regards to the two dogs in the background. (We were much closer to them but I moved a little further away to take a photo).

Have you seen a robot lawn-mower before? I could imagine that some dogs would be alarmed by this, especially if it happened to move towards them. The client-dog I was with when I saw this wasn’t at all interested - but I was!

This particular mower was from Oso Electric. I like that it’s powered by batteries, not gas. I suspect we’ll see more of these in the future!

Andy looks like the bartender who’s ready to listen to all of your problems!

We were taking a break from watching other dogs (and looking for squirrels) to do some “suburban agility”, which is what I call teaching dogs to climb or jump on rocks and other landscaping features. I like giving dogs challenges that are not as emotional to give them a break from the “serious” things we’re working on, such as not barking and lunging!

Chewy was feeling pretty under-the-weather when we had our Zoom appointment so he snoozed through most of it. But I look forward to helping him learn better leash manners and how to greet guests, once he’s feeling a bit better!
