“Sometimes the smallest things take up the most room in our hearts.” – A.A. Milne

Of course our beloved cats are not “things.” They are the most special and resplendent beings we have the good fortune to love. In rescue we are no stranger to the fragility of life and the fleeting time we are afforded with this most loving part of our heart can be fleeting. Most of these cats lived many years with their forever families, a few left their parents far sooner. For the handful that knew our volunteers as family, we thank those earth angels for their selfless devotion.

These precious cats passed away in the last year and we share our heartfelt condolences with all who loved them. Please share any remembrances or messages of love for their families in the comments below 🤍

Tim McPaw’s journey to his forever home is a testament to the transformative power of compassionate care and community.

Though his early years remain a mystery, Tim built a quiet life among a patchwork of neighborhood back yards. Initially thought feral, he responded when a kind neighbor called to him. That kind neighbor happened to be Jennifer, one of our very special staff members. Jennifer herself is patient, kind, and quick to help, so we were not surprised to learn she had been earning Tim’s trust for months. She nicknamed him Tatsu. Jennifer’s favorite memories are of how he would present himself for meal times. He would sit in front of her sliding glass back door & meow at her family until they noticed him and brought him his special “soup” (wet food mixed with warm water). When he started trusting her more, he would eat Churus from her hand from the top of the fence.

When he began eating less and showing signs of pain, Jennifer sought help. After a worrying month-long disappearance, Tatsu returned unwell. That’s when The Dancing Cat stepped in. Now officially named Tim McPaw, he was too underweight for the dental care he required. With foster support, he received rest & reassurance, and his true nature began to emerge as his health was restored. Best of all he could still see Jennifer.

Our adoption team knew Tim needed someone extraordinary until the most extraordinary kismet event. Another Jennifer saw Tim and their souls connected. Jen applied, & it was clear she was his person. Tim approached her with stoic curiosity, accepting treats and gentle pets. Jen saw what others had overlooked: a cat ready to love deeply.

Jen learned his boundaries and met them with care. Within days, Tim began to bloom; playing, chatting, & seeking pets with growing trust. His charm emerged — soft, sweet, & unmistakably him. Tim finally has what he has always deserved, a home where his boundaries are respected, his sweetness is celebrated, and his future is safe and bright.

Tim’s journey carried him from the heart and arms of one amazing Jennifer & it is our great honor to announce that Tim McPaw is The Dancing Cat’s 2,000th adoption!

Lola was a very cautious kitten who was unsure of pretty much everything and everyone. In her foster home she hid, watched, and slowly tested the world—finding courage bit by bit. Cats as conventionally gorgeous as Lola garner quite a bit of attention online and often receive more applications than other cats, which can be extra challenging to navigate when people might be drawn in by outsides instead of complex insides.

This was not the case for an introspective and thoughtful adopter called Chloe who felt she really understood Lola. When they met, Chloe let Lola set the rhythm: eventually a wand toy on the bed became their first connection, and from there, each small step built on the last.

Today, Lola, now named Moka, and Chloe are each other’s besties! Days are filled with wand play, lap cuddles, and nose kisses. Moka follows Chloe room to room, and proudly drops her toy on the bed at midnight, ready for adventure. Every day Moka grows braver and Chloe grows more in love with her. Moka has found a home where she can be exactly who she is, with someone who gave her time to become herself. Adoption #1999 is a glowing example of twin flames finding each other.

Satya arrived at our door when her family faced housing restrictions and could not keep both her and a dog. Instead of doing an immediate intake, we supported them with a Courtesy Post on our website and time to find the right solution. When space opened in our rescue and she still needed a place to go, we welcomed Satya into our care. At the lounge, she appeared reserved and spicy, always a bit on guard. Our experience and intuition let us know that wasn’t the full picture and she was placed in a loving foster home to decompress.

In a quiet home as a single cat, she slowly began to relax and show her real self. Being fostered is like magic for so many of our cats, whatever they need to feel safe or seen is discovered at their pace and suddenly one day they relax into a softer life. There she met Suzanne, who had shared 52 years with cats, was ready for a deep connection again after moving to be near her daughter. She saw Satya’s photo and felt drawn to her right away. When they met, Suzanne saw a cautious, beautiful cat who just needed time, understanding, and agency—and she knew how to give her exactly that.

Once Satya (now Shadow) moved, we kept in mind the 3-3-3 rule, allowing Shadow to adjust at her own pace. Three days in, she was finding her rhythm—enjoying “room service,” exploring the newness of it all, and filling the house with her chatty little voice and her extensive vocabulary. Three weeks in, she was accepting full-body pets, discovering her favorite toys, and continuing to share her very expressive opinions. Three months later, Shadow has come fully into her own: playful, curious, affectionate, and deeply bonded, sleeping beside Suzanne each night. She loves her favorite little fuzzy llama toy and little springs.

In Sanskrit, Satya comes from the root word Sat, meaning “truth” or “that which is real.” It’s often translated as truthfulness, but its deeper meaning points to living in harmony with what is real: both within and around us. Satya is a living embodiment of her name now as adoption #1998 and we are grateful to everyone who helped her along the way.

Life on the streets is never easy for cats, and many arrive at the shelter with histories we can only guess at. Brennan was one of them—a thin, lethargic cat surrendered without much explanation. But the moment he came to our attention, his soulful presence was unmistakable. We couldn’t wait to meet him.

At just eight pounds, Brennan needed time to heal. With steady food, rest, and care, his personality began to shine. And what a personality it was. Brennan quickly became a lounge favorite. He became known as our beloved “uncle cat.” Calm, patient, gentle, and endlessly chill, he had a natural gift for welcoming new cats and helping them settle. He was the steady heartbeat of the room.

As Brennan grew stronger, he also grew a fan club. His calm charm, smoldering eyes, and unbothered nature made him impossible not to love. Visitors adored him. Volunteers swooned. The staff half joked he was “boyfriend material.” For all of us, it was joyful, and deeply meaningful, to see an older, FIV+ cat inspire such universal affection.

When adoption applications poured in, our team faced a tough decision. Ultimately, YC and Yifan stood out. Their thoughtful, patient approach reflected how they truly saw him, as a sweet companion whose soft grace made him unforgettable.

From the moment Brennan arrived, he settled with ease. Affectionate, steady, and a little goofy, he claimed his spot on the couch, joined playtime on the floor, and even proudly took over the bed at night. He loves brushing, greets guests warmly, and delights in little bursts of mischief. During a recent earthquake, he stayed close to his people; a small moment that spoke volumes about trust.

After winning so many hearts, Brennan finally has the peaceful, loving home he deserves: cherished, protected, and adored for exactly who he is as adoption #1997.
