Happy Community!

Last week, our Animal Services Officers had the opportunity to visit a local South San José preschool as part of the students' Community Helpers unit.

Our officers team spent time teaching the children about animal services, pet safety, what to do if they find a lost pet, and how microchips help reunite pets with their families. The students even got hands-on experience practicing microchip scanning with plush pets

Each student also received Junior Officer stickers and pet safety coloring pages to take home and share with their families.

The visit left a lasting impression. After the presentation, the children spent the rest of the day pretending to be Animal Services Officers and sharing what they had learned with their classmates.

We are grateful for opportunities like these to connect with young community members and help teach the next generation about responsible pet care and animal welfare. Thank you to the preschool staff for welcoming us into your classroom and making the visit such a memorable experience!

Leave Kittens Alone… until it’s time to Fix at Six or 1.5 pounds!

During kitten season, the best thing you can do for healthy outdoor kittens is to leave them where they are while mom continues caring for them. If kittens appear healthy, warm, and safe, they are not abandoned, their mother is caring for them. Removing them too soon can do more harm than good.

As kittens grow, timing matters. Once they reach approximately six weeks of age or 1.5 pounds, they are ready for the next step: spay/neuter surgery or “Fix at Six.”

Community members who bring kittens under six weeks or 1.5 pounds to our shelter will be asked to participate in our Emergency Foster program, where kittens remain in their care until they are large enough for their spay/neuter surgery.

We provide all necessary supplies and medical care if needed. Once kittens reach six weeks or 1.5 pounds, you will be able to schedule a spay/neuter appointment through our shelter.

Kittens under six weeks and 1.5 pounds should only be brought to the shelter if they are sick, injured, or in immediate danger. Otherwise, the safest choice is often to leave them in place, observe from a distance, and use our kitten aging guide before intervening.

ACS and Miranda’s Rescue Update:

Earlier today, Animal Care and Services (ACS) officers retrieved all, four dogs from Miranda’s Rescue. The dogs are now en route back to the San José Animal Shelter.

Officers reported no immediate health concerns at the time of pickup. Upon arrival, each dog will receive a full medical examination by our veterinary team to identify any visible or underlying health needs.

Last week, 12 kittens of various ages arrived at our shelter after being discovered inside a dumpster.

A compassionate community member heard their cries, investigated, and immediately brought them to safety. In this case, intervening was absolutely the right thing to do.

We often encourage people to leave healthy outdoor kittens where they are while mom cares for them. But these kittens were in immediate danger, and the best thing for these babies was to bring them into our shelter.

Three of the kittens are now in foster care, while the remaining nine are being cared for at the shelter. All 12 have received their initial vaccines, and a few are currently being treated for URI.

While this story is heartbreaking, it is also a reminder of the incredible work our shelter teams do every day, especially kitten season. From intake exams and medical treatment to feeding, cleaning, monitoring, and socialization, our dedicated staff, fosters, volunteers are there for pets when they need it most.

Thank you to the community member who stepped up to help, and to our shelter teams who continue showing up for animals in need every single day. ❤️

Hey ! This evening one of our shelter volunteers shares what a typical shift looks like, from checking socialization notes, to spending time with adult cats, shy cats, and playful kittens:

“A typical volunteer shift for me starts with checking the binders in each cat room… I usually start with the adult cats and then make my way down to the kittens, spending time with each one through play, petting, treats, or just sitting with them if they’re feeling shy.

A big part of volunteering is helping cats get comfortable with people and showing them that human interaction can be positive and safe… It’s so rewarding to see a cat go from scared and unsure to seeking out attention and affection.”

Want to become a Cat/Kitten Socializer volunteer? Here is how to get started:
