SAVE OUR REDWOOD TREE!
Caltrans plan to replace the Lagunitas Creek Bridge (Green Bridge) includes cutting down a Heritage Redwood Tree in the front parking lot of Point Reyes Animal Hospital. The tree will be destroyed to make room for a temporary power pole. After the project the pole will be removed and the power lines will be returned to their original location. The Redwood Tree will be gone forever! The power lines have to be re routed to make room for cranes that are needed to slide in the new bridge. Re routing the lines behind the Veterinary Hospital would save the tree. Caltrans response to this alternative was that they would have to spend more money, and rent more land for the overhead utility easements.
The Redwood Tree at stake was evaluated by a certified arborist to be healthy, with 5 significant trunks, approximately 80 feet tall, it qualifies as a Heritage Coastal Redwood Tree. It seems inappropriate and unnecessary to route temporary power lines through the only large tree on the property, especially in a fragile Riparian Zone.
The California Coastal Commission is voting on the permit to allow replacement of the bridge which includes cutting down this Redwood Tree to erect the temporary power pole and lines. The hearing date is November 14th, 2024 in San Francisco. This is our last chance to comment on this project. Please join me in expressing your disapproval and submit written comments by November 13th to California Coastal Committee. You may also request to speak in person at the meeting or by zoom. "Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.” – Anatole France

Paola’s soul is awake and overflowing with compassion. Those of you who own pets understand the unconditional love and companionship your pet gives you. When your pet needs emergency help or simply has to go in for a check up, it is reassuring knowing Paola is there, helping in the care of your pet. She currently is one of the lead tech's at the Pt Reyes Animal Hospital working with Dr. Mary Whitney. Paola is completing her education at SRJC specializing in the field of animal care and has been approved by the state Veterinary Medical Board to sit for the Registered Veterinary Technician exam for the state of California.

With her education she has gained confidence in herself and her future. In her words, “ College made me feel independent and positive that I was moving in the right direction. It also made me more aware: aware of different people, their beliefs, and backgrounds. Moving on to the Veterinary Technology program at SRJC, I’ve found that the students there are even more diverse, especially in age. This made me realize that it’s never too late to start college and continue your educational journey. Between my coursework and an intense internship with a local veterinarian, I am now about to embark on a career I’m very excited about.”

We can say, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you Paola. Thank you for being there to help take care of West Marin's pets. WMSP is honored to have helped you achieve your dream of becoming a veterinary technician.
