Happy 4th birthday to our Community Veterinary Clinic! 🎉

For four years, the CVC has been providing accessible, compassionate veterinary care to pets and their people in San Francisco’s Excelsior neighborhood.

Born from listening to our community, the CVC helps bridge the gap between preventative services and comprehensive veterinary care through multilingual, culturally responsive care designed around the needs of each pet and family.

The CVC is also an important part of the citywide system of care we’re building, connecting our Mobile Vaccine Clinics, Community Ambassadors, spay/neuter services, full-service hospital, and community partners.

None of this would be possible without our incredible CVC team. Thank you for four years of learning, growing, and helping more pets access the quality care they deserve. 🐶🐱

Happy birthday, CVC! 🐾

Meet Dr. Katia Shinkle, one of our newest doctors at the SF SPCA Veterinary Hospital 🩺🐾

Dr. Shinkle brings experience in small animal medicine to the SF SPCA and a passion for building strong relationships with clients and patients.

She was drawn to the SF SPCA by her commitment to access to care: “I am very passionate about access to care. I love that our hospital is able to help members of our community for whom there aren't other viable options for care for their pets.”

For Dr. Shinkle, one of the most rewarding parts of veterinary medicine is empowering pet guardians with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about preventative care and treatment options.

It’s an approach you’ll find reflected in the work at the SF SPCA Veterinary Hospital, San Francisco’s largest AAHA-accredited general practice hospital. Here, doctors practice thoughtful, full-service medicine while helping expand access to care for the San Francisco community.

Outside of work, Dr. Shinkle enjoys running, hiking, birding, herping (searching for amphibians and reptiles in the wild), reading, watching old movies, trying new foods, and spending time with her dogs, cats, and tarantulas.

We’re growing our veterinary team and looking for doctors who want to practice compassionate medicine, work alongside experienced colleagues, and make a difference for pets and their families.

For nearly a year, Rory's family watched their beloved cat become increasingly anxious, reactive, and fearful. Despite trying enrichment, environmental changes, and careful management at home, Rory's behavior continued to escalate, leaving his family unsure how to help.

Working with the San Francisco SPCA Behavior Team, Rory's family developed a personalized plan that included behavior support, enrichment recommendations, and medication. Today, we're happy to share that Rory has gone nearly a year without an aggressive incident and is calmer, happier, and more comfortable navigating daily life.

Stories like Rory's remind us that behavior challenges are often rooted in fear, anxiety, or stress and that support is available. We're grateful to have been part of Rory's journey and proud of the progress he and his family have made together. 💛🐾
