San Francisco Aid for Animals (SFAfA) was founded in 2011 by four San Francisco veterinarians who were alarmed by the number of pets being euthanized or surrendered due to their owner’s inability to pay for veterinary care. In 2012, after raising money through donations, they began providing grants to San Francisco area veterinarians to help pet guardians pay for their pet’s urgent, treatable medi

Socks got into trouble after swallowing a cat toy that became lodged in his esophagus. He needed surgery to make sure the foreign material was removed and that his digestive tract was clear.
Thankfully, the veterinary team found no additional foreign material in his stomach or intestines and successfully completed the procedure. Socks was able to begin his recovery with his family, ready to put his adventurous eating habits behind him! ❤️🐱

SFAfA’s Tea Party at the Zoo was everything we hoped it would be—and more! 🫖🐾

We’re so happy to hear how much our guests enjoyed the afternoon, from the lite-bites and tea, to the silent auction, animal encounters, and wonderful docent stations. We also loved hearing about your adventures around the Zoo and rides on the carousel! It truly was a delightful afternoon to remember.

At 12 years old, Sugar Cube arrived critically ill with a severe uterine infection called pyometra. She was weak, dehydrated, had not eaten in four days, and was at serious risk of sepsis. Emergency surgery was her only chance. Thankfully, her surgery was successful, and with intensive supportive care, Sugar Cube slowly began to improve. Over the following days, she became more alert, started drinking, walking, and exploring again. After fighting so hard, Sugar Cube was finally able to go home to continue her recovery. We’re so grateful she was given the chance to heal and get back to being a happy dog. ❤️🐶

🐾 Meet Leila! ❤️
Poor Leila experienced a traumatic eye injury after an incident at the groomer, leaving her left eye severely displaced and requiring immediate surgery.
She underwent a surgical repair to save her eye, and thankfully, her recovery has been even better than expected! Her eye is now properly positioned, and she is showing encouraging signs of useful vision.
We’re so happy to see Leila healing and hope she continues to make a wonderful recovery! 🐶💗

🐾 Sugar Cube's Fight for Recovery ❤️

At 12 years old, Sugar Cube arrived critically ill with a severe uterine infection called pyometra. She was weak, dehydrated, had not eaten in four days, and was at serious risk of sepsis. Emergency surgery was her only chance.
