🌡️ Friday Heat Check 🐴

As we head into the weekend, remember: horses feel the heat even more than we do. High temperatures can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke in minutes.

Watch for warning signs:
• Heavy breathing or flared nostrils
• Excessive sweating (or lack of sweat)
• Lethargy or stumbling
• Elevated heart rate

Keep them safe:
✓ Provide constant access to fresh, cool water
✓ Ensure shade is available at all times
✓ Limit exercise during peak heat hours
✓ Hose down or sponge with cool water
✓ Monitor closely for any distress

This Friday and every day—when temps rise, take extra precautions. Your horse depends on you. 💙

Happy Tuesday!

As we approach the weekend please be sure to have your medical kits ready and sedatives on hand approved by your veterinarian. 4th of July is stressful for most horse owners but as this is the 250th Birthday, it may be more intense.

Please do not wait until Friday to contact your veterinarian with questions/concerns about Saturdays festivities.

We hope everyone has a wonderful week and stay safe!!

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has provided an important update on New World Screwworm which has been detected in a bovine in Zavala County, Texas. Read the full press release here: https://www.aphis.usda.gov/news/agency-announcements/usda-confirms-presence-new-world-screwworm-united-states

General information about New World Screwworm (NWS) can be found in the text below and in the attached infographic.

The adult screwworm fly is about the size of a common housefly (or slightly larger), with orange eyes, a metallic blue or green body, and three dark stripes along its back. It gets its name from the behavior of its larvae (maggots) as they burrow (screw) into the wound, feeding as they go. The maggots (larvae) cause extensive damage by tearing at the hosts’ tissue with sharp mouth hooks. The wound can quickly become enlarged and deeper as more maggots hatch and feed on living tissue.

Because they feed on live flesh, NWS maggots may burrow deep into wounds or openings, while other species of maggots may appear around the outer surface of the wound. In addition, even the smallest wounds have the potential to attract flies, so it is imperative that you keep a close eye on your animals for any signs of wounds.

Lastly, NWS infestations are a reportable disease! Immediately report any suspicious wounds, maggots, or infestations to a local accredited veterinarian, your State Animal Health Official, or a USDA veterinarian.

For more information, reference this resource from the U.S. Department of Agriculture: https://www.aphis.usda.gov/animals/animal-health/livestock-and-poultry-disease/stop-screwworm

Happy Wednesday!!

Samson says "Well Doc, what do you think? Am I as handsome on the inside as I am on the outside?"

The final verdict is yes, he is. Today Samson was getting some radiographs to figure out why his feet are bothering him.

Dr. Stadelmann was hard at work getting to the root of his issues when he decided he wanted to see his insides as well. We love having x-ray equipment in both of our ambulatory trucks to make sure we can assess all problems and try to find the best solution.

Happy Tech Tuesday!!

Today we wanted to talk about a machine we use quite often, the SAA.

Serum Amyloid A (SAA) is used as a rapid, sensitive, and objective horse-side diagnostic marker for detecting infection and inflammation. With results in minutes, it helps us guide antibiotic treatment and detect subclinical inflammation early, often identifying issues before they appear on a clinical exam.

Key Applications of SAA in the Field:
▫️Rapid Diagnostics: SAA serves as a "quick check" tool that provides objective, immediate data, allowing for on-the-spot decisions on whether to treat, refer, or perform further diagnostics.
🔹️Inflammatory Monitoring: Because SAA levels increase rapidly (within hours) in response to inflammation and decrease promptly with resolution, it is superior to fibrinogen for monitoring the recovery of conditions like pneumonia or infectious diseases.
▫️Antibiotic Stewardship: Veterinarians use serial SAA testing to track if antibiotics are effectively lowering inflammation, allowing them to stop treatments as soon as levels return to baseline.

Benefits of Point-of-Care SAA:
🔹️Rapid Results: Point-of-care (POC) testing provides data in minutes, which is crucial for determining if a sick horse needs immediate hospitalization.
▫️Objectivity: Provides concrete numbers to justify treatment changes to owners.
🔹️High Sensitivity: SAA is highly sensitive to early inflammation compared to other markers like white blood cell counts.

We will always recommend also running a complete blood panel to see why the body may be having the response it's having and how to continue on the best course of action.

Happy Tuesday! Today we are going to highlight our Shockwave machine. You may see us use this alot when your horse has an injury or prior to a show.

But why do we choose Shockwave? Why is it so helpful? What exactly does it do? Thats what we are going to answer today.

▫️What is Shockwave?
🔹️Shockwave is the best choice for the non-invasive treatment of a wide spectrum of injuries – bone and soft tissue. NeoVet is your tool to turn on, amplify or re-start the natural healing cascade. Electrohydraulic shockwaves switch on the healing effect without the inflammatory phase of a real injury. The unique and key benefit from electrohydraulic technology is that a true shock wave is produced at source and covers the entire treatment area instead of just the focal volume. This results in a large volume of tissue being stimulated with each pulse, enabling rapid treatments and effective healing.

▫️How does it work?
🔹️Essentially, shockwave function through activation of the natural healing response and can be applied safely and easily without risk of any significant side effects. To put it simply: electro-hydraulic shockwave therapy switches on a cells response to injury without actually causing any damage to the cell.

▫️What is observed when Shockwave is used?
🔹️Biologic effects:
· Vasodilation and new vessel growth
· Stem cell activation
· Anti-inflammatory effects
· Release of growth factors (eNOS, BMP, VEGF etc.)

Clinical effects:
· Increases blood supply
· Regenerates soft tissue
· Regenerates bones
· Promotes faster healing

▫️What types of wounds or injuries can Shockwave be used for?
• Suspensory disease
• Tendonitis
• Stress and non-union fractures
• Sesamoiditis
• Bone cysts
• Proximal splint bone fractures
• Interosseus ligament injury
• Kissing spines
• Muscle strain or soreness, particularly of the back
• Poorly healing wounds

▫️Is Shockwave used just for wounds and injuries?
🔹️Nope! If you have a show coming up and your horse tends to get sore in the neck or hind end, we can Shockwave the neck, back and gluts to keep comfort in the game and your horse at peak performance.

If your horse(s) are showing some signs of body soreness, give us a call to schedule an appointment. We want to nake sure they are happy and healthy and able to do their jobs at 100%. Whether that be comfort while retired, or top of their game in a show. An exam is necessary prior to Shockwaving to ensure we are targeting the correct areas.
