Rescuing a dog is only the beginning❤️
This is Tina, and she was rescued by a loving family three months ago. Tina arrived at my house four days ago for two weeks of dog training. And that’s a good thing, because this sweet little girl has a lot to learn.
Her family had been trying for three months to get her to walk on a leash with no success. She didn’t want to leave the house. She’s afraid of almost everything. She’s affectionate and a little playful, but she doesn’t even seem to understand that playing with another dog is something she can do or enjoy.
It truly seems like in the beginning of Tina‘s life, someone just loved her – and thank God for that. But I don’t think she was ever really exposed to the world outside her home.
When you bring home a puppy, you’re basically starting with a blank slate – and you’re 100% responsible for what you create. When you rescue an older dog, you’re not starting from scratch. They may already be affectionate, loving, house trained, or know a few commands. In some ways you’re getting a Headstart. But you’re also bringing home a history – and many times that history is a mystery.
A rescued dog may not fit perfectly into your life on day one. There may be fears, behaviors, and experiences that you have to work through together. Unfortunately, all too often dogs are returned when they turn out not to be the perfect fit their new family imagined. Dogs are sensitive, deeply loving creatures. Every time they are returned, moved from home to home, or shuffled from foster to foster it can affect them and their behavior.
Rescuing a dog is a commitment to help that animal – not just a commitment to bring them home and give it a try.
Tina is already making progress because her family took their commitment to her seriously. When they realized she needed more help then they could give her on their own, they brought her to me for training. After three months of refusing to walk on a leash, she is walking on a leash. Yesterday, I even took her to the dog park for the first time. Did she have a fantastic time? Absolutely not.😂 but she went. She explored. She handled it very well. And considering where she started, that was a pretty big deal.
Tina doesn’t need to be a perfect fit right now. She needs the people who rescued her to be committed to helping her become one. And they are❤️❤️

IRRESISTIBLE PUPPY !! should she get her way?
What happens when people get to do whatever they want, whenever they want, all the time, and nobody ever tells them no?
That’s right. They go a little nuts, and what they want to do gets crazier and crazier.
Dogs are no different.
Structure is not punishment. It’s a healthy part of life. Knowing what’s expected of them and having clear, consistent boundaries gives dogs predictability – and predictability helps them feel safe and comfortable.
Dog training doesn’t have to be something you set aside time to do. Build a little bit of it into the time you already spend with your dog.
Next time your dog is requesting your assistance in some way, ask them to sit first. You’re not being mean. You’re giving them a rewarding job and asking them to cooperate with you. When they sit, spoil the hell out of them for a job well done.😂
Make cooperating with you rewarding.
Those little everyday moments build a dog that’s used to cooperating with you and taking your direction all the time. And when the chips are down, that can make all the difference in the world.

Boss is my name. Security is my game.
I’ve been in the security game long enough to know a thing or two about: guarding food, guarding valuable toys, neighborhood watch, perimeter checks, addressing suspicious activity, dominating big dogs, and generally staying on top of things, etc. I already have a full-time gig and it pays pretty well, but a guy can’t get all his treats from just one basket, you know what I mean😏. I think I owe my dog an apology.
Last Easter, I suddenly lost my dog and longtime business partner. I mourned for a few months and was not exactly emotionally ready for another dog, but a dog trainer without a dog is kind of ridiculous.🤦‍♀️
I have always rescued my dogs and created the dog I need. So along came Freya, a young Catahoula who needed a home.
I’ve probably been a little unfair to her. I spend all day working and noticing my clients’ progress. Then I come home after a long day of dog training, and sometimes the last thing I feel like doing is working with my own.🥱 On top of that, I’ve been comparing a puppy still in training to become my partner to a seasoned dog who had years to perfect the job.
Freya discovered fetch the first time I took her to Dog Beach. We found a ball laying around. I picked it up and threw it. She proceeded to go and get it with speed and bring it right back and dropped it at my feet with no training at all.🥹
She was instantly obsessed with balls and I realized I don’t want go down that road. I take her to the park and throw the ball all the time but when I take her to the dog park, I want her to play and interact with the dogs (for training).
She did not care what I wanted, and she enjoyed the game so much she started stealing everyone else’s expensive balls, and bringing them back to me. No matter how far away she had to go to get it. Not once did I reward the thievery by throwing the ball. I always take the ball and find the owner if I can and return it, which is a pain in the butt and got very frustrating.  before long  she got smart and figured out her best chance of playing ball was to return it to whoever threw it. Apparently she’s irresistible and a very good communicator. She’ll bring a complete stranger, their ball, convince them to throw it again for her, and they almost always do. I’m usually watching from a distance.😂
The other day I caught her playing fetch with this 3 1/2 year-old little boy. He’s fumbling with the ball, taking his sweet time, and she’s just standing there waiting – no jumping, grabbing, or knocking him over. The little guy chucks it and she brings it right back, drops it and does it again.🥹 And it hit me.
I’ve been so busy noticing all the ways she isn’t my old dog that I haven’t been giving her enough credit for the amazing dog she’s becoming.  the new dog is never going to be the old dog. But if we’re paying attention, we might notice how special the one right in front of us really is in their own way.
Freya, you got my attention. And I appreciate you for who you are and who you will become.❤️🐾❤️

Children are often a lot more capable than we give them credit for.❤️ after I finished working with a family’s new puppy this week, the youngest daughter grabbed her little f***y pack, filled it with treats and p**p bags, just like mine, and headed into the backyard to work with the puppy herself.
Her family told me she repeated almost the entire lesson from memory🥰.
When it comes to, raising a healthy dog, the whole family can help.🐾

Her family told me she repeated almost the entire lesson from memory🥰. It made me smile and reminded me that when it comes to raising a healthy dog, the whole family can help.
