The work of SDZWA extends from San Diego to strategic and regional conservation “hubs” across the globe, where their strengths—via their “Conservation Toolbox,” including the renowned Wildlife Biodiversity Bank—are able to effectively align with hundreds of regional partners to improve outcomes for wildlife in more coordinated efforts. By leveraging these tools in wildlife care and conservation science, and through collaboration with hundreds of partners, SDZWA has reintroduced more than 44 endangered species to native habitats. Meet the new gorilla boys 🦍

San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance is ape-solutely honored to welcome two new western lowland gorillas. Matumaini (mah-too-mahEE-nee), a 33-year-old silverback whose name means "hope" in Swahili, is joining the troop at the Safari Park’s Gorilla Forest. Known as a patient, kind, and socially intelligent mentor to younger gorillas, Matumaini will bring valuable experience and a steady presence to the troop's social dynamics, leadership that echoes the gentle strength Paul Donn was known for. He was introduced to the troop over the weekend and is settling in well. The gorillas are under 24/7 monitoring as they get used to spending time together and Matumaini is already fast friends with some of the girls.

Kitoko (ki-TOE-koh), a spirited 6-year-old whose name means "beautiful" or "handsome" in Lingala and Kikongo, is joining Denny and Ekuba in the bachelor troop at the San Diego Zoo’s Lost Forest. Agile, curious, and always up for a climb, he'll have the opportunity to learn alongside older males, just as he would among bachelor groups in native habitats.

Western lowland gorillas are critically endangered, and the Alliance is proud to support the protection of this troop-endous species and their ecosystems through our African Forest Conservation Hub. As both males settle in, you may have the chance to spot them at the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park in the coming weeks.

Steller update🦅

Since fledging at the end of June, this young Steller’s Sea Eagle has been spreading her wings and branching out from her favorite perch. She’s been exploring, trying new things, and even discovering some new hobbies, like swimming and collecting rocks and sticks.

She’s also having to learn that mealtime means working for your dinner. Her parents used to feed her first, but now that she’s older, she's getting the leftovers and chasing them down for a bite. All that swooping, scrambling, and snatching is helping her sharpen her flight skills and footwork. She’ll be a true Steller snack star in no time.

Born in 2020 at the San Diego Zoo, she's gone from pint-sized calf to splash machine. Float on by on your next visit to the Zoo to say hello to Ama and the hippo girlies.

Nose to meet you, coati 🦝

Meet the white-nosed coati, a raccoon relative full of personality and pure curiosity. Their long, flexible noses can rotate up to 60 degrees, making them expert bug detectors, and their tails, nearly as long as their bodies, help them balance as they climb through the trees. Native to the American Southwest through Central and South America, these little explorers are definitely worth getting to nose.

Behind every new smol addition is a team whose dedicated care helps support healthy, sustainable populations of vulnerable and endangered species at the Zoo, Safari Park, and beyond.

Treetop twirls 🍊

Whether it's seeing curious Kaja climbing or Karen on a (literal) roll, hanging with the orangutans at the San Diego Zoo is always bound to be a good time. This canopy crew loves to swing through their habitat, nap in the sun, and even share a hammock or two.

In native habitats, Sumatran orangutans are critically endangered. San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance is proud to be a part of the AZA's Orangutan SAFE program, which aims to protect and restore orangutan populations and their native habitats through public engagement, funding, and field work.

Red-y for his close up ❤️

Meet Itsuki, a sweet 11-year-old male red panda. He's a busy boy getting to know his new surroundings and finding the best places to perch. All that exploring works up a tree-mendous appetite for his favorite snacks, bamboo and Chinese elm. And when he needs to recharge, a quiet spot in the treetops or stretched over a log is the pawfect place for a nap.

Keep looking up for this bear-y cute arrival to Panda Ridge. Guests may spot Itsuki alternating with Adira, the bamboo-tiful female red panda.

This is spar-ta 🐘

What may look like a playful poolside tussle is actually an important part of elephant social life, helping these pachy bros strengthen bonds, practice skills, and build strength. At the San Diego Zoo, youngest male Nipho is often ready to spar with the bigger boys, and these playful moments help build confidence and keep the bachelor group thriving.

What we learn from elephants here can help protect them in native habitats, too. San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, alongside partners around the world, advance elephant conservation through studying elephant behavior, communication, comprehensive health, and movement while supporting rescue, rehabilitation, and coexistence between people and these gentle giants.

Native to the Pacific shores of Peru and Chile, Inca terns are masters of agility, tern-ing, gliding and swooping through the air. And with their unmistakable facial feathers resembling magnificent mustaches, they might just be the most dapper birbs around.

You can visit these mustachioed marvels on your next visit to the San Diego Zoo or Safari Park.

Two years of purely perfect pandamonium 🐼

Two years after their public debut at the San Diego Zoo, Yun Chuan and Xin Bao continue to grow, learn and show off more of their beary unique personalities. Yun Chuan is becoming a confident climber and remains an avid nap enthusiast, while Xin Bao is somersaulting her way through dynamic experiences inspired by native habitats.

The pandamonium is going strong, and we couldn't be more grateful to our incredible teams and guests for celebrating with us. Roll your way into Panda Ridge for a chance to spot this pawesome panda pair.
