🌱 YES, you can transplant seedlings right now — even when it’s HOT! ☀️

Here in Zones 9/10, waiting for “perfect” transplanting weather can mean waiting a long time. The key is helping those young plants get established without getting stressed.

Here’s how I’m transplanting my fall garden now:

💧 Deep water at planting. Don’t just wet the top inch of soil. Give each transplant a long, deep drink so the entire root zone is moist. Keep a close eye on moisture while those roots get established.

⛱️ Use shade cloth. A little protection from our intense afternoon sun can make a HUGE difference. Shade cloth helps reduce transplant shock while seedlings establish their roots. Once they’re settled in, you can gradually remove it.

🐌 Protect them with Sluggo Plus. Fresh, tender seedlings are basically a buffet for slugs, snails, earwigs and other pests. I apply Sluggo Plus around new transplants so they don’t disappear overnight.

🌱 Transplant late in the day. I prefer evening when the sun is less intense. This gives seedlings the entire night to settle in before dealing with another hot day.

And remember: a little wilting after transplanting doesn’t automatically mean your plant is dying. Keep it deeply watered, give it some temporary shade, and let those roots get established.

🥕 PRO TIP for better carrot germination!

Carrot seeds are TINY—and one of the easiest ways to struggle with germination is burying them too deep or letting that top layer of soil dry out.

Here’s what I do instead 👇

After sowing my carrot seeds, I top them with a very thin layer of fine seed-starting mix instead of chunky garden soil.

Why? Seed-starting mix is fine and lightweight, so it:

🥕 Gives you better seed-to-soil contact
🥕 Makes it easier to cover those tiny seeds without burying them too deep
🥕 Helps hold moisture around the seed
🥕 Creates a softer surface for tiny seedlings to emerge through

Then keep that top layer consistently moist while you wait for germination. Carrots can take their sweet time, and letting the surface dry out is one of the easiest ways to end up with spotty rows.

Here in Zones 9 & 10, fall is CARROT TIME! 🙌🥕
