Flat-faced dog ownership is declining across the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and continental Europe. Experts attribute the trend to growing awareness of these breeds’ serious health problems, shorter life spans, and high veterinary costs, along with public policies aimed at discouraging their breeding.

The United States remains an exception, however, with the French bulldog retaining its position as the nation’s most popular purebred dog in 2025, marking its fourth consecutive year at No. 1. The breed’s popularity has surged in recent decades: Between 2006 and 2016, the number of registered French bulldogs in the U.S. increased by 476%, according to the American Kennel Club.

Los Angeles County has reported a record number of flea-borne typhus cases, with approximately 90% of patients requiring hospitalization. Typhus is a bacterial disease transmitted by infected fleas commonly found on rats, cats, opossums, and occasionally dogs. Symptoms typically appear one to two weeks after a flea bite and may include fever, headache, nausea, body aches, vomiting, and rash. In severe cases, the infection can impact multiple organ systems and can be fatal. To reduce your risk, contact your veterinarian about year-round flea prevention for your pets and avoid contact with stray animals.

Is your dog vaccinated for Lepto? Leptospirosis Vaccine (commonly called the lepto vaccine) is now considered a core vaccine for dogs as of 2024. 💉🐶🌊

Spring is here! And with that comes a warning about Leptospirosis, a disease caused by infection with Leptospira bacteria.

All dogs are at risk of leptospirosis, regardless of age, breed, lifestyle, geographic location, time of year, and other factors. The following situations can increase that risk:

➡Exposure to or drinking from slow-moving or stagnant water sources, like ponds, rivers, lakes, or streams
➡ Roaming on rural properties (because of exposure to potentially infected wildlife or farm animals or urine-contaminated water sources)
➡ Exposure to wild animals (especially rodents) or farm animals, even if in the backyard
➡ Contact with other dogs (such as in urban areas, dog parks, or boarding or training facilities)
