Meet Nikki! 💛🐾

The rescue world can be a scary and overwhelming place, so when you get the chance to work alongside some truly good humans, it’s such a gift.

Our friend HARD KNOX RESCUE | ORANGE COUNTY is absolutely overflowing with rescues right now, and then this sweet little kitten wandered into her friend’s life. Of course, we all knew we had to figure out a way to help her.

Together, we’re working to find Nikki a safe place to land. 💛

Since we’re way out in the mountains and pretty far from Long Beach, we reached out to our good friends at Cats Of Oceanside to see if she could hold Nikki for a day until I can make the drive out.

Without hesitation, she said YES. 🥹

So for now, sweet Nikki is tucked away in her very own posh penthouse—decompressing, luxuriating, and getting spoiled while we figure out what comes next. 👑🐱

We think she’s around 4–5 months old, and as you can see, she is an absolute sweetheart.

Shes been checked for a microchip and HARD KNOX RESCUE | ORANGE COUNTY posted everywhere she could think of looking for her family, but so far… nothing.

Sadly, there’s a very real possibility that this little girl was dumped. 🥺

But whatever happened before she found her way to us, one thing is certain:

Nikki is safe now. 💛

And thanks to some pretty incredible people in this rescue community, she doesn’t have to figure out what comes next alone.

I’ve sat down a couple of times to write this post, and each time l’ve stopped myself. Nobody likes to see the sad side of animal rescue-especially these days, when there is already so much sadness around us. But the truth is, this side of rescue is very real, and it is a huge part of our daily lives.

A few months ago, we took in five kitties from a horrific hoarding situation out in the desert. 🌵 One of them was this absolutely beautiful girl-the sweet little kitty you see in this photo with her adorable bow tie.

She had started losing weight rapidly, and we initially thought she might be fighting some type of infection. When we felt a lump in her stomach, we became concerned that there could possibly be a pregnancy-related complication, so we got her to the vet and they hurried to do surgery.

They found a horrific cancerous tumor in her abdomen that she wouldn’t survive. During surgery, the vet called and asked for permission to let her go peacefully.

One of the hardest parts for me personally is that I had asked my son to help with her transport. In doing so, he was he was given a firsthand look at one of the most heartbreaking sides of animal rescue. That has weighed so heavily on my heart.
I never imagined this would be the outcome. I am devastated.

I never imagined this would be the outcome. You can look at these photos and see this beautiful, seemingly healthy little girl. We had no idea what was happening inside her tiny body. And I think that’s part of why I decided I needed to share her story. I feel so grateful we were able to give her at least a few months of normalcy compared to living a life outside in the middle of a terrible junkyard hoarding mess.

Life is short. Sometimes heartbreakingly short. 💔

We truly don’t know how much time any of us have. We don’t know when we’ll take our last breath or when someone we love will take theirs. Maybe this sweet girl can be a little reminder to all of us to love harder, forgive faster, find the joy where we can, and bring as much happiness and kindness into this life as possible.

Pumpkin’s tongue just has a mind of its own which is pretty great because the only thing Pumpkin has on his mind is love. He’ll never leave your side, at least not voluntarily and loves pretty much everyone…including cats!

People’s Karen Bass shirts are arriving.

You should too, because the hell animals are enduring demands that she DO SOMETHING.

Instead of ending the cruelty and enforcing the laws she is paid to enforce, the City, including Mayor Karen Bass, is seeking to have our lawsuit dismissed. They have done so three times. Rather than taking action to protect animals, the City is spending taxpayer dollars fighting a charity that’s demanding accountability.

Think about that.

Get your shirt. Wear the truth. Demand action.

👸🏼Winnie wanted to remind everyone that tonight at midnight is the final opportunity to help us reach our $3,000 matching donation goal.

We’re not quite there yet, and yesterday we spent over $850 so her grandma could have a full-mouth dental extraction. Both Winnie and grandma want to say thank you to every single person who has donated—even if it was just $1. Every gift has brought us closer to making the most of this incredible matching opportunity.

We also want to give a very special thank you to the Cantore family (chris cantore & Heather Rymal Cantore)for adopting Winnie and treating her like the princess she truly is. 😆 Knowing she’s so loved and cherished means the world to us. 👑🧡

Our rescue is at a truly pivotal moment, and every single dollar makes a real difference.

This has been one of the most difficult Julys we can remember. We endured the rattlesnake attack, I heartbreakingly lost two of my senior rescue dogs within 24 hours of each other, we battled an extreme heatwave, and even faced a forest fire less than three miles away.

Through it all, your kindness, encouragement, and donations have carried us forward.

Like so many animal rescues that rely 100% on the generosity of our community, we’re struggling right now.

Every day, I see two heartbreaking things happening: incredible people in rescue walking away because they’re exhausted and broke, and rescues turning on each other. I refuse to be part of that. This work is already hard enough without adding more pain and stress.

Right now, this sweet girl needs a dental procedure as soon as possible. We can get her in if we raise the funds by Thursday. The cost is $850, which is nearly one-third of what most veterinary clinics would charge.

On top of that, we’re behind on a few of the bills that keep a roof over the heads of our rescue cats and dogs. If we can’t catch up by Friday, the shelter where they’re safely housed will have no choice but to remove their homes.

We don’t have all the answers. All we can do is ask for help.

The good news is that a generous donor has offered to match every donation dollar-for-dollar through midnight on the 31st, doubling the impact of your gift.

If you’re able to donate, no amount is too small. If you can’t give, sharing this post could help us reach someone who can.
