Omg 😲 the water is perfectly clear!! One thing I've learned from reef keeping (fishkeeping in general, really) is rocks in moving water provide a space for filtration and beneficial bacteria to thrive. Providing the correct substrates, filtration, and water movement is essential to any water feature whether a nano tank or a large pond or mega reef. Granted we are only a short amount of time into this pond being alive (approximately 1.5 weeks), enough has been added that the cycle is well underway and you can see it! Other unintentional tests have been done like a power outage which showed me that there is not enough back flow for this pond to overflow from an outage. The water also seems to be moving enough now to keep (more) mosquitoes from laying eggs. Until the cycle is complete and I understand the temperature swings well enough no fish will be added so I have to be diligent about mosquito prevention. Unfortunately it seems too late in the season here in Missouri for pond plants at stores so that will likely also have to wait. It seems too soon to tell if the sun will be cause for concern but something tells me I'll have plants in there before I'll have to worry about that considering it's already spooky season. Thanks for following my pond journey! Stay tuned for more!

Rocks!!!! Being that these are sedimentary rocks there are so many fossils in them!!! Nice little touch for the pond if you ask me. Now I only need to fill in the overflow path with small rocks and the pond is done!!! I'll still be putting aquatic plants and fish in eventually.. but at least the hard work is just about done!!!

Coming right along!!! Apparently the mud daubers thought this was an open invitation... but I'm sure they'll go away soon!!! Cheers to progress with the pond!!!

Growth!!! The paludarium is slowly but surely growing and cycling. The snails are settled in, the red root floaters are spreading, the springtails are eating up the mold, and the plants are starting to dig in their roots and spread through the tank!!! Stay tuned for more!!! 🤓

Today's pond progress: more rock placement and the start of the overflow path. The sunflowers and I are racing to see who will be done first!!! In the meantime I have to take care of these mosquitoes!!! Don't forget when you're building an outdoor water feature to address things like mosquitoes and water overflow!!! This pond isn't quite ready for fish yet so I'll have to figure something else out... 🥰🥰🥰

Currently in progress: a small backyard pond inside an herb garden! When done this water feature will be full of life! It will blend into the natural landscape around it and bring critters to help fertilize the herbs and aquatic plants! The aquatic plants will help keep this waterscape clear and clean and the cascading waterfalls will keep things aerated. I'm so excited!!!!
