I’ll be teaching my Intro to Canine Nose Work class starting NEXT WEEK on October 21 at Pup Pup and Away 🎉

If you’ve never heard of nose work or you’re wondering what we’ll be doing in class, I included a few clips of my own dog working so you can see what it looks like in action! 🐶

Canine nose work taps into one of your dog’s greatest natural abilities: their sense of smell. It gives them an opportunity to use their nose, problem-solve, build confidence, and engage in an activity that’s mentally enriching and fun!

You don’t need a professional working dog to get started. Nose work can be a great activity for all kinds of dogs, and I can’t wait to introduce more dogs and their humans to this sport! 🐕‍🦺

Are your dogs crate trained? If so, what made you decide that crate training was the right choice for your household? Was it for potty training, safety, travel, relaxation, management, or something else?

My leash-length preference might be a little controversial… 😂

Personally, I prefer a 4ft leash for everyday training and walking.

Why? I like having enough leash to give my dog some freedom while still maintaining good communication and control. I don’t want a bunch of excess leash getting in the way, especially when I’m actively training.

That said, I definitely do use longer leashes! I just use them for specific purposes.

🐕 6ft leash: Great for everyday walks when I want to give my dog a little more room.

👃🏾10ft & 15ft leashes: These are primarily my nose work leashes. The length I use depends on the size and setup of the search area and how much freedom I want to give the dog to work.

To me, there isn’t one “perfect” leash length for every situation. The right leash is the one that fits the job you’re asking your dog to do.

“Good boy!” ≠ “YES!”

One of the biggest distinctions I make in my training is between verbal praise and a marker word. 🐕‍🦺

When I say “good boy” or “good girl,” I’m often using it as a temperature check — basically telling my dog, “You’re getting warmer! Keep going!” 🔥

Maybe they haven’t given me the exact behavior I asked for yet, but they’re moving in the right direction. Verbal praise lets them know that I like what they’re doing without necessarily telling them, “That was the exact answer I was looking for.”

My marker word is different.

When I say my marker — or use a clicker — I want it to mean:

👉 “YES! That exact behavior is what I wanted, and you’re about to get paid for it.” 💰🐶

The goal is for the marker to become incredibly clear and predictable. When my dog hears that marker, they should know they successfully completed the behavior I asked for and a reward is coming.

That clarity matters! The more precise we are with our communication, the easier it becomes for our dogs to understand what behaviors actually earn reinforcement.

Think of it like this:

🗣️ “Good boy!” = You’re getting warmer!
🔔 Marker/click = THAT’S IT! You got it! 💰

Neither is inherently “better.” They simply serve different purposes in my training.

And remember: the marker isn’t the reward — it tells the dog the reward is coming. 🎯

As a dog trainer, I want my dogs to understand exactly what earns them their paycheck, rather than making them guess.

🎃☕️ PUMPKIN SPICE GREENIES?! 😭

I’m sorry… WHAT dog knows what pumpkin spice is?! 😂

One of the criticisms I hear all the time about the raw and fresh-food community is that it’s “all marketing” and that these companies use fear-mongering to sell pet parents on their products.

And look — there absolutely ARE companies in the fresh/raw space that use fear-based marketing. I’m not going to pretend otherwise.

BUT let’s not act like conventional pet food companies don’t market to us, too. 👀

Because today I discovered that they make PUMPKIN SPICE GREENIES. 🎃🐶

And I have questions. 😂

Your dog isn’t sitting around waiting for pumpkin spice season. They don’t know it’s fall. They aren’t thinking, “Wow, I really hope Mom brings home my seasonal pumpkin spice dental treats.” 😂

This product is clearly designed to appeal to US — the humans who love pumpkin spice everything. ☕️🍂

And that’s the point of this video:

👉🏾 Marketing happens across the entire pet industry.

As pet parents, we should be looking past the marketing on BOTH sides and asking: What does my individual dog actually need?

You don’t have to be anti-kibble to feed fresh food. You don’t have to feed raw to care about nutrition. And you certainly don’t have to buy your dog a pumpkin spice latte just because you love one. 😂🎃

Pet nutrition should be about education—not fear, guilt, or falling for clever packaging.

🚨 PLEASE VACCINATE YOUR PUPPIES & KITTENS. 🚨

This is one of those topics I feel VERY strongly about. 🤦🏾‍♂️

I recently met a woman who told me she didn’t vaccinate her dog until he was 2… almost 3 YEARS OLD. And honestly, my jaw hit the floor.

And before anyone jumps into the comments — NO, this rant is not me saying you have to vaccinate your pets every year for the rest of their lives.

I actually titer test my own dogs because I believe there is value in taking an individualized and holistic approach to their healthcare.

But there is a BIG difference between questioning unnecessary or excessive vaccination and choosing to leave a young, vulnerable puppy or kitten completely unprotected.

Your puppy or kitten doesn’t have to go to boarding. They don’t have to go to dog parks. They don’t have to go to daycare. They don’t even have to spend much time around other animals.

They can simply walk through your neighborhood.

They can sniff where another dog has been.

They can encounter contaminated soil or f***s.

They can have an unexpected interaction with another animal.

And suddenly, the risk you thought was minimal isn’t so minimal anymore.

That’s why I believe the initial puppy/kitten vaccine series is so important. Give that young animal a chance to develop protection while their immune system is still developing.

After that? If you want to take a more holistic approach, discuss titers with your veterinarian. If you prefer to follow the recommended vaccination schedule, that’s your choice too.

There isn’t just ONE way to approach your pet’s healthcare.

But please — don’t gamble with a puppy or kitten’s health by choosing not to vaccinate them at all. ❤️

Holistic care should be about making informed decisions, not avoiding preventative care simply because it’s conventional.

🐶🐱 Protect them first. Then make informed decisions about what comes next.
