"Tang," "surgeonfish," "unicornfish" — different names, same 🐠 Know Your Tangs: The Acanthuridae Family Breakdown 🐠
Ever wonder why some fish are called "tangs," others "surgeonfish," and some "unicornfish"? Surprise—they all belong to ONE family: Acanthuridae (from Greek akantha = spine, oura = tail). That scalpel-like blade on their tail base is their namesake defense weapon! ⚔️
Here's how the family breaks down:
🔹 Subfamily: Nasinae — The Unicornfishes
Genus: Naso
Elongated, torpedo-shaped bodies. Many grow a horn on their forehead! These are the giants of the family—some reach 3 feet!
→ Examples: Bluespine Unicornfish, Orangespine Unicornfish, Bignose Unicornfish
🔹 Subfamily: Acanthurinae — The True Tangs & Surgeonfishes
Tribe Acanthurini (Surgeonfishes)
Classic oval, laterally compressed bodies with bold patterns. Includes the "bristletooth" group with comb-like teeth for scraping algae.
→ Examples: Achilles Tang, Convict Tang, Kole Tang
Tribe Zebrasomini (Sailfin Tangs)
The showstoppers! Tall, sail-like dorsal and a**l fins. Most popular in the aquarium trade.
→ Examples: Yellow Tang 🟡, Sailfin Tang, Purple Tang, Regal Blue Tang ("Dory"!)
Tribe Prionurini (Sawtail Surgeonfishes)
Multiple fixed spines on the tail (not just one). Less common but tough!
→ Genus: Prionurus
🌊 Why They Matter
Tangs are the "lawnmowers of the reef." Their herbivorous diet keeps fast-growing algae from smothering corals. No tangs = algae takeover. Healthy reef = happy tangs!
🏠 Aquarium Quick Tips
✅ Large tanks (75+ gal) — they're active swimmers
✅ Feed plenty of algae/seaweed sheets
✅ Add them LAST to reduce territorial aggression
✅ Quarantine! Prone to ich under stress
💡 Bottom line: Whether it's a Yellow Tang, Unicornfish, or Surgeonfish—they're all cousins in the Acanthuridae family. Know the family, know the fish!

Hey Sea Hare Family! 🐠 🐟 To allow our team time to enjoy the summer season with their families, Sea Hare Aquatics will be operating on shortened hours for the week of June 16th-Fri, June 19th: Closing at 6:00 PM.

Note, we will be closed for Father's Day (June 21) with regular hours to resume on Tuesday, June 23. (12 PM–7 PM Tuesday–Friday and Sunday 11-4P)
