Q's & A's for the topic of doodles/poodles at the salon!
✂️Why do doodles/poodles cost more to groom? These thick, dense coats are both time consuming & labor intensive. These complex coats are prone to matting &/or tangles, require extensive time to properly blow dry & brush out (even without matts or tangles), require more hand sc******ng & shaping on haircuts, & require a higher skill level from your groomer if requesting breed standard haircuts such as pom-poms, shaved poodle feet, etc.
✂️How often should I be brushing my doodle/poodle? EVERYDAY, especially if they are long and fluffy. What happens if you skip a whole day brushing your own hair; you'll have a tangled mess! Now imagine it being not only on top of your head, but your entire body! High friction areas (like armpits, neck from collars, behind ears, etc) matt up quickly due to frequent movement &/or scratching, water & food from their bowls clump up in their muzzle, outside debris can easily get stuck in feet, legs, & tail, swimming & not being dried/brushed out properly afterwards are all just a few quick ways your pup becomes matted faster.
✂️What type of brush should I be using at home? A good slicker brush. Make sure you are brushing all the way down, not just lightly on the top coat. If not brushed all the way down, the undercoat can still become matted. If you have any questions on how to brush properly, your groomer can show you!
✂️Why can't you just brush out the matts? Matts not only are uncomfortable for your pet, they are painful as well. While some groomers will de-matt, Top Tails believes your pet should be most comfortable when visiting their groomer; therefore, we will try to work out matting if it is not too close to the skin already. If it is too far down, shaving out is the least painful & ethical option....don't worry, their hair will grow back in no time!

Q&A's for the topic of puppies at the salon!
✂️ When can my puppy come in for a grooming? As soon as they complete all rounds of vaccinations with their veterinarian.
✂️ How do I know what groomer to go to? While personal references are great, not everyone knows someone with a dog that goes to get professionally groomed. When searching for a professional groomer, call & ask questions before booking. Pay attention to red flags; if you are being rushed off the phone, questions not being answered, taking dogs before they are fully vaccinated, etc. You should feel comfortable before even stepping into a salon with your pet.
✂️ What do I need to do before my puppy gets their first groom? Desensitizing at home is a great start! Running your vacuum cleaner (or other loud household objects) will help your puppy get used to loud noises like the blow dryer at the salon. Massage/play with your pup's feet to get them used to being handled for nail trims & haircuts. Socializing your puppy with new people/surroundings will help them acclimate at the salon without you.
✂️ What if my puppy freaks out? A puppy's first appointment is all about positive reinforcement! A groomer should try & ease them into the process without making it a traumatic experience. Taking things slow is a must with puppies. While majority of puppies do fine for their first time, there are cases where your puppy may need more than one appointment to get the job done... which is totally okay! If a puppy is flailing around or is extremely scared, they have the possibility of getting injured. A groomer should know when to call it quits to keep everyone safe & make a good first experience for the pup.
✂️ How often should my puppy get a haircut? Depending on how quickly their hair grows, most pet owners go between 4-8weeks. Depending on hair texture/length, they may even be able to go up to 10-12weeks.
✂️ Will frequent baths cause irritation? As long as your groomer is using a pH balanced shampoo, your pup should be fine to get a bath as often as you prefer! Some pets with skin issues may require specific shampoo such as an oatmeal, hypoallergenic, or even medicated.

Lets talk double coats! Double coated dogs such as Siberian Huskies, German Shephers, Alaskan Malamutes, Labradors, & Corgis (to name a few common breeds) have two coat layers; a top coat and an undercoat. Double coated dogs tend to shed ALOT! While shaving is not recommended for this type of coat, it is essential to brush properly; especially longer haired breeds like Huskies or Malamutes. If these breeds are not regularly brushed at home, their undercoat becomes impacted and makes the grooming process much harder on your pup and can lead to matts. It's never too late to make a routine brushing session at home with a slicker brush a few times a week, especially during shedding season! Starting immediately, we will be adding additional charges to double coated dogs that have severely impacted undercoats due to the excessive amount of time it takes to blow out/brush out/dry during their grooming visit. Relieving impacted undercoats to dog's coats who are not maintained regularly is VERY time consuming and requires a certain level of skill from the person working on your pup, similar to the de-matting process. If you need help or tips on home management with brushing double coated dogs, ask your groomer; we are happy to help! 😊🐾
