Pet Sitters International Releases First Global Standards for Professional Pet Sitting and Dog Walking

(October 14, 2025) — Pet Sitters International (PSI), the world’s leading educational organization for professional pet sitters and dog walkers since 1994, has released the first publicly available Global Standards for Professional Pet-Sitting and Dog-Walking Businesses.

Developed from PSI’s Recommended Quality Standards for Excellence originally established for PSI members by PSI Founder and CEO Patti J. Moran and her team, the updated framework establishes baseline best practices for pet-care businesses worldwide. Moran and her team have more than 120 years of combined industry experience.

PSI’s Global Standards were reviewed by leaders in the pet care, insurance, and pet health and safety fields, along with a pet owner panel, ensuring they reflect both professional expertise and consumer expectations.

“Since its inception PSI has asked member businesses to commit to standards for excellence in pet sitting and provided them with the resources to meet those standards,” explained PSI President Beth Stultz-Hairston. “Because the pet-sitting industry is rapidly growing but still largely unregulated, we knew it was more important than ever to share our association’s professional industry standards framework with pet-care professionals and pet owners.”

⭐️UPDATE, the dogs referenced in this story belong to Amy K. in California. The injuries have been verified and we posted the story as shared but protecting anonymity for her sake when dealing with her injured puppies. WARNING. This plant is more available than ever as a unique house or garden plant. It is dangerous to pets and could also be to uninformed humans.

This pet was chemically burned on 30% of his body by a plant! Yes a plant. This is what is called "Firestick succulent". When a piece is broken off the milky substance is extremely acidic and toxic to humans, dogs, and cats. The smaller sibling ingested it and is also ill with serious vomiting and lethargy.

Update, the little one is up and eating a small amount, the larger dog is in severe pain and visiting vet often for wound care and medications.

Euphorbia tirucalli 'Sticks on Fire' (Red Pencil Tree) -
Comes in both red & green form.
All euphorbias have a sap that can cause serious harm so use caution when dealing with them.
Always wash your hands after handling
Not a plant to have around animals.
