The Snow White Bristlenose Pleco (Ancistrus sp.) is a stunning, hardy freshwater algae eater. Growing to 4–6 inches, they require a minimum 20 to 30-gallon tank with driftwood and caves. These peaceful fish thrive at 72–82°F, pH 6.5–7.5, and eat algae, sinking pellets, and blanched vegetables.
Care & Tank Parameters: Temperature of 72°F to 82°F
pH: between 6.5 and 7.5, and KH of 3 to 10 dKH.
Minimum Tank Size: 20 to 30 gallons.
Diet: While they graze on nuisance algae, they require a varied diet. Feed sinking algae wafers, Repashy gel diets, and blanched vegetables (zucchini, cucumber, and spinach).
Tank Mates: Peaceful with community fish like tetras, rasboras, dwarf cichlids, and corydoras.
Appearance & Temperament: The Snow White variant—derived from albino strains—features a solid, bright white body and piercing blue eyes. They are available in both short-fin and long-fin varieties. They are peaceful toward tank mates, but males can be territorial toward other plecos. As they mature, males develop prominent, bushy bristles on their snouts, while females develop smaller or no bristles.
Availability & Sourcing: Because they are highly sought after, prices generally range from $30 to $50 depending on size and fin type.
