If people can't help but to treat their dogs like children then do the healthy version of that. Figure out their likes and dislikes, favorite foods, hobbies, sport, toy etc. Take them to the park, hiking, to see, smell and interact with new things safely.

This is what establishing the relationship with a new pup looks like for me. Most people are in the same area with their pups but are still disconnected. The puppy is running around wild and when it does decide to return to you the human is forcing love and affection, never clear boundaries or guidance. More to come.
