My dog hates my new puppy!!
I hear this at least 1 a week!!
So what’s going on here why do so many dog friendly dogs HATE the new member of the family?
It’s simple really! It comes down to RESPECT, EXPECTATIONS, and BOUNDARIES when a new puppy comes into the family. They’re granted instant freedom that your adult Dog or existing Dog already has there is no slow build. There is no boundaries. There is no separate time. We are expecting our dogs to have the exact same want and desire for the puppy that we did when we brought them home expectations that are going to set your existing dog up and your puppy failure. It is extremely important to remember that you adult dog or existing dog did not ask for the puppy. They are simply along for the ride when I bring a new dog into my house. There are a few things that I implement right away day one.
1. From day one, the puppy is kennel, trained, and or playpen trained.
•The reason why I do this is to create healthy separation and boundaries.
•And creat neutrality! Leading to less over arousal in the house and less of a likelyhood of fights later on
2. I only allow minor corrections from my adult dogs to the puppy.
* everything is monitored by ME
* My adult dog didn’t ask for the puppy it’s MY responsibility not my dogs responsibility to train them!
3.slow introductions!!
* I keep the puppy on a leash and or in a play or pen if I can’t monitor interactions.
* Absolutely no stealing food treats or retention. It is given individually one at a time to each dog. I never make them fight for attention, food or space.
* If I allow them to play, it is with close supervision and I make sure to stop the puppy when I noticed that they are getting too much.
My dogs can EXPECT are that I will stand up for them when the puppy is too much. Everyone will know their BOUNDARIES and everyone will be RESPECTFUL with food, toys, treats, space, and needs!
