I’ve simplified dog training more and more over the years.

Most pet dog owners aren’t looking for fancy obedience or impressive tricks. They want something much more practical.

They want to know their dog is safe.
They want a reliable recall.
They want calm, understandable communication.
And they want the freedom to actually enjoy life together.

A little structure, a few important skills, and a dog that understands what’s expected can create a tremendous amount of peace.

This is what training should give you.

More freedom. Less conflict. More days like this.

If you want more freedom and less stress with your dog, send me a message. That’s what we train for.

Sometimes this is all you need. Coffee, dogs, and nowhere else to be. ☕️🐕

Corrections can interrupt a reaction. They don’t necessarily change how your dog feels.

Here, Fitz hears a dog growling behind the fence and makes the decision to disengage and keep moving.

There’s a place for corrections in training. But relying too heavily on them can create more stress and confusion without addressing what’s driving the behavior in the first place.

A huge part of moving from reactivity toward neutrality is building better feelings: safety, optimism, confidence, and the understanding that not everything in the environment is a big deal.

The goal isn’t just a dog who knows they shouldn’t react.

It’s a dog who genuinely feels like they don’t need to.

Are you correcting reactions, or helping your dog feel safe enough to make a better choice?

If your dog struggles with reactivity, the goal shouldn’t just be stopping the behavior. Let’s build the calm, confidence and neutrality that makes the reaction unnecessary.

Don’t wait until you NEED a recall to find out you don’t have one.

A reliable recall isn’t just a cool obedience skill. It’s one of the most important things you can teach your dog for their safety and their freedom.

The better your dog responds when it matters, the more of the world you can safely experience together.

Want to build a recall you can actually rely on? Send me a message.

Most dogs are walked every day. Very few actually know how to walk with their person.

When I stop, they stop. When I move, they move. They’re paying attention, matching my movement and learning to navigate the world with me.

That’s what we’re building: connection, impulse control and neutrality.

Most dogs never get the framework or repetition to learn that everything around them isn’t such a big deal. When they do, you start to see a calmer, more confident dog who feels safe in the world and can simply be present.

A good walk should do more than just burn energy.

Ethix Canine Structured Walks are designed to build calmness, leash manners, neutrality around other dogs, impulse control and better real-world social skills.

The dogs still get plenty of movement, but the goal isn’t to exhaust them. It’s to help them become calmer, more capable and easier to live with.

Small groups. Simple rules. Consistent practice.

Currently running Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings.

Message me if you’d like your dog to join the group.

A lot of dogs don’t need MORE activity. They need more opportunities to practice being calm while life is happening around them.

Day one of Ethix Structured Walks and I’m really pleased with this group.

The rules are simple. I stop, they stop. I speed up, they speed up. I slow down, they slow down. The leashes stay loose and everyone learns to pay attention to the person holding them.

Simple rules. Easy wins. Consistency.

Over time we’ll continue building leash manners, auto-sits, neutrality around other dogs and people, and the ability to settle into a calm state while moving through the real world.

Honestly, there’s something pretty peaceful about walking around with a group of dogs that are all learning to move together without chaos.

Ethix Structured Walks are running Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings.

If you’d like your dog to join the group, send me a message.

Fitz didn’t need to stop liking dogs.

He needed to learn that seeing another dog doesn’t mean something has to happen.

We worked on being around dogs without pulling toward them, getting overly excited or needing to interact.

By the end, he could walk calmly alongside them and even hang out with me while my dogs played fetch nearby.

That’s the kind of socialization I want: a dog who can enjoy the world without being controlled by everything happening in it.

And apparently Fitz discovered that walking laps around a concrete bench is pretty entertaining too 😂

Calm. Confident. Optimistic.

Sometimes the best thing we can ask a dog to do is simply be okay.

Rosie tends to be an anxious dog in general, and when her owner is working with the horse, she really wants to stay close. But around a horse, that isn’t always safe.

So we started simple. Getting comfortable around the horse, learning to move away from her owner, and realizing that nothing bad happens when she creates some distance.

Once she could handle that, we could ask for a little more. Here she’s holding a downstay while her owner rides past.

It may not look complicated, and that’s the point.

Helping dogs succeed sometimes means making things very easy at first. Asking for more than a dog is ready for can work against us. Give them something they can handle, let them succeed, and then gradually build from there.

I’ve also been learning more about horses and horse training lately, and there are a lot of parallels. People who really understand horses often seem to have a natural understanding of dogs too.

Timing, pressure, communication, safety, and knowing when asking for less will ultimately get you more.

Progress doesn’t always have to look impressive. Sometimes it starts with a dog learning they can simply be okay.

If you want your dog to feel calmer and make better choices in the real world, send me a message. Let’s talk.

I didn’t get my Dutch Shepherd because I planned on becoming a pet dog trainer.

At the time, I had been decoying in PSA for a handful of years, and I had every intention of competing. Then I thought maybe I’d pursue IGP. I had this vision of my dog and me doing all the cool bite sport stuff.

And I still have a tremendous amount of respect for the people who dedicate themselves to dog sport, protection work, police and military dogs, scent work and all the other incredible things dogs are capable of.

But somewhere along the way, I realized that wasn’t where my passion was.

What I really loved was helping individuals and families with the dogs they live with every day.

All of those experiences gave me a deeper understanding of how dogs learn, how they perceive the world, how different training tools can be used thoughtfully, and how much clarity and structure can change a dog.

But they also taught me something else.

People seriously underestimate how much stress an unruly dog can put on someone’s life.

I’ve seen dogs become a major source of conflict in marriages. I’ve met people who feel isolated because they can’t comfortably have guests over. People who avoid walks, outings or certain situations because managing their dog has become exhausting. I’ve even seen disagreements over a dog contribute to family members no longer speaking to each other.

A dog is supposed to add something good to your life.

Companionship. Adventure. Connection. Joy.

When the relationship becomes dominated by stress, frustration and management, it affects far more than just the dog.

That’s ultimately why I do what I do.

To know what I know and not use it to help people would feel like a waste.

There are few things more rewarding to me than watching the transformation when a dog becomes calmer, more reliable and easier to live with, and the person on the other end of the leash finally feels confident again.

That’s the work I care about.

Calm Dogs. Confident Owners. Reliable Behaviors.

If life with your dog has become more stressful than you ever expected, reach out. There may be a much better version of life together on the other side of some good trai
