PUPPY VACCINE 101: Why do we vaccinate about every 3 weeks?

Those vaccine appointments aren't randomly spaced!

After vaccination, your puppy's immune system needs time to recognize the vaccine antigens and develop an immune response.

Meanwhile, the antibodies your puppy received from mom are gradually declining.

By vaccinating at approximately 3-week intervals, we're repeatedly giving the immune system an opportunity to respond as that maternal protection fades.

This is why staying on schedule matters.

Giving vaccines too close together doesn't make immunity develop faster.

Waiting too long between puppy visits can leave a larger window where your puppy may be susceptible to disease.

Following the recommended puppy vaccine series helps us build reliable protection during one of the most vulnerable periods of your dog's life.

Don't stop the series just because your puppy has already had one or two vaccines!

TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE: This one can fool you!

Patient: 4-year-old neutered male dog

Owner’s History: Several days of decreased appetite, intermittent vomiting and diarrhea, and progressively worsening weakness. Today, he just “isn’t himself.”

Physical Exam: Quiet and dehydrated with weak pulses. Heart rate is lower than we would expect for a dehydrated, sick patient. No obvious foreign body or significant abdominal distention appreciated.

Recommended Diagnostics:
• CBC
• Chemistry & electrolytes
• Urinalysis
• Abdominal imaging

Results:
• Sodium: LOW
• Potassium: HIGH
• Na:K ratio decreased
• Mild azotemia
• Abdominal imaging does not identify an obstruction

The electrolyte results immediately change the direction of our workup.

WHAT’S YOUR DIAGNOSIS?

Veterinary friends, pet owners, and students—drop your answer below!

Cases like this demonstrate why vomiting and diarrhea aren't always “just an upset stomach.” In-house diagnostics at Arden Road and Arden South help our veterinarians investigate the bigger picture.

PUPPY VACCINE 101: “Why does my puppy need another shot?”

It's one of the most common questions we get—and there's an important reason!

Newborn puppies receive antibodies from their mother that help protect them during their first weeks of life. The catch? Those maternal antibodies can also interfere with vaccines.

As puppies grow, maternal protection gradually disappears—but we can't predict the exact day it happens for each puppy.

That's why we vaccinate puppies in a series. Each vaccine gives their immune system another opportunity to recognize these viruses and develop its own protection as those maternal antibodies fade.

Our vaccine is specifically designed with a high antigenic mass and has demonstrated the ability to help overcome maternal antibody interference—but completing the entire puppy series is still extremely important.

A puppy isn't fully protected just because they've received their first shot.

Next up: Why do we recommend approximately 3 weeks between puppy vaccines?

TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE: Can you solve this feline case?

Our patient is an 11-year-old neutered male cat.

Owner’s History: Normally a great eater, but over the last few days he has stopped eating, vomited several times, and has been hiding more than usual. His owner has also noticed gradual weight loss over the last few months.

Physical Exam: Quiet but responsive, approximately 7% dehydrated with mild cranial abdominal discomfort and noticeable weight loss.

🔬 Recommended Diagnostics:
• CBC & chemistry panel & In House T4
• Urinalysis
• Abdominal radiographs
• Abdominal ultrasound

Results:
• Elevated total bilirubin
• Elevated ALT and ALP
> T4 - within normal limits
