HEARTWORM 101: It Starts With One Mosquito

Heartworms aren’t spread from dog to dog. They’re spread by mosquitoes.

When a mosquito bites an infected dog, it can pick up immature heartworms and later transmit them to another dog.

And yes — we have mosquitoes in West Texas.

Even dogs that spend most of their time indoors can be exposed. That’s why heartworm prevention isn’t just a summertime recommendation.

Our recommendation:
Year-round heartworm prevention + routine testing.

Preventing heartworms is much easier than treating them.

FLEA & TICK 101: What's the BEST prevention?

The best prevention is the one that is safe for your pet, fits their lifestyle, and stays consistent.

Some families prefer monthly prevention. Others want longer-lasting options so there's one less thing to remember.

At Arden Animal Clinics, we offer multiple parasite prevention options, including:

Bravecto Quantum® – 365-day flea and tick protection for dogs
NexGard® – monthly flea and tick prevention for dogs
Topical prevention options for our feline patients

Your veterinarian can help choose an option based on your pet's age, health, lifestyle, and individual needs.

Available at Arden Road Animal Clinic and Arden South Animal Clinic in San Angelo.

West Texas parasite season doesn't have an off-season—keep them protected year-round.

The Dog Who Won’t Stop Coughing
What’s Your Diagnosis?

An 8-year-old small-breed dog comes in for a cough that has gradually worsened over the last several months.

The owner reports:
- Dry, “honking” cough
- Worse with excitement or pulling on the leash
- Occasionally coughs after drinking water
- Otherwise eating and acting normally

On examination, gentle pressure over the trachea easily triggers the cough.
Chest X-rays are recommended to evaluate the airway, heart, and lungs.

What’s your diagnosis? Comment your guess below.
