Rabies isn’t talked about much, but it remains a lethal disease with an active prevalence in wild animal populations. If there is ever exposure of saliva or a scratch from a wild animal it should be tested, if this is not possible the person should be vaccinated. It is vital to keep our domestic animals vaccinated, as many of our patient’s exposures are from bats getting in the house as they are so tiny.

This disaster of rabies exposure, potentially hundreds of people, could have been prevented if the skunk had been tested for rabies.

I took our foster kittens in to Operation Pawsible for their spay surgeries yesterday! 🥰

We had the absolute joy of helping MEOW Cat Rescue this week to provide spay and neuter surgeries for some exceptionally adorable kittens ❤️

While our team was hard at work making sure these little ones got the highest quality surgical care, we definitely managed to sneak in plenty of extra snuggles. There is truly nothing better than a post-op cuddle puddle with a bunch of sweet babies! 😻

Piper developed a squinty eye with discharge, so we stained her eye and found this large corneal ulcer.

It’s important to promptly address any eye issue involving squinting, as that is an indication of pain. I’ve seen a few cases this month of young dogs with mysterious eye issues, dogs do stick their faces into plants and shrubs and getting eye injuries happens. We always want to check for a corneal injury though, in addition to being very painful they can have an injury like this which will need treatment right away.

I’m happy to say 24 hours later with her eye medication, Piper has no more discharge and she is no longer squinting. We’ll continue her treatment, but it’s a good reminder of how quickly we can help them feel better with the appropriate eye medication.

A little bat flew down our chimney last night, and managed to get themselves up in a grate area of our fireplace where we couldn’t reach them this morning (we don’t have a traditional flu lever). This afternoon the bat came down from the grate and was climbing the glass door and inside of the fire box. I was able to easily wrap them in layers of a thick towel, and take them to a wildlife/wetland area across the street to let them go.

Handling bats is a risk. If this bat had been loose in our home overnight while we were sleeping, I would have sent it in for rabies testing. No one would know if they’d been bitten or scratched by a tiny bat in their sleep. If I were not vaccinated for rabies and a confident handler of small, quick flighted animals, I would have contacted a wildlife specialist to catch this bat.

Never assume a bat laying still is deceased, assume it may be frightened and could quickly bite. Attempting to touch one with bare hands or even gloves alone is a risk. Moving a bat, even one you believe is deceased, is best done not touching it at all.

A bat that came into contact with visitors near Staircase Bridge on Aug. 9 has tested positive for rabies.

Anyone who may have had contact with a bat in the area should contact a healthcare provider and their local health department promptly to determine whether treatment is needed. Rabies is a fatal but preventable disease if appropriate medical care is received promptly following an exposure.

Visitors should never touch or handle bats or other wild animals. If you encounter a bat, dead or alive, keep your distance and notify park staff.
