Did you know that to renew state licensure, veterinarians have to keep up with continuing education (CE)? That helps ensure we are keeping up with the latest information.
I love learning so I actually have zero trouble exceeding minimum CE requirements (generally 15 hours a year). Our diagnostic lab here in Kentucky also puts together plenty of great, free CE for us on the food animal side. But every now and then I budget to actually go somewhere and pay for CE. This year, ADGA Convention is nearby (only 3 hours away) in Indianapolis! What a great opportunity to get some goat-specific CE that I can also call a business expense. 😊

While I'm gone Friday evening through Monday, The Animal Clinic in Lawrenceburg will be covering my emergencies. I will still be responding to texts and some calls.

(Also, if anybody is needing "bucksicle" transport, I will be bringing my tank. Transporting to/from KY/IN but I will also be driving to Maryland next month as well as attending NAILE.)

Alright y'all we are long overdue for some good news and for a non-compete lawsuit update. I had a long post written out to help me process but it got too long to really convey what I was wanting to convey. Long story short, never sign a non-compete because you really need an escape route if things get bad. (I'm actually all for simple non-solicitation clauses as a reasonable alternative! But people should be able to choose their vet and limiting services in an already struggling area is nuts.)

The 1-year 25 mile portion of my non compete is expired, and the 5-year non-solicitation/acceptance portion got shortened down to 2 years (effectively expired since it's been 3+ years)[EDIT now that the written order is actually out: non-acceptance cut to 1 year but non-solicitation continues the full 5 years...which is fine because I never actually solicited anybody]. It's been a long and expensive process and nobody really gained anything financially (still being calculated) although I'm totally free to practice a little earlier than I would have been had it not gotten shortened.

🐄 What that's going to look like moving forward is I'm opening things up to more cattle clients in Mercer, Anderson, and Woodford counties; I will still cover everybody I've already been serving outside those counties, but trying to limit new clients to a smaller area to keep emergency coverage sustainable.

🐎 I'm still limiting equine clients because being solo (and a mom to 2 littles, and busy on my own farm) I don't want to be slammed with emergencies (sorry but horses love to colic and hurt themselves 🙃, they were 90% of my emergency calls when I was 50% equine). If you're an existing equine client or somebody I've talked to already you're good. If you're willing to haul to Lexington for emergencies and just looking for somebody to cover your routine stuff, let's talk.

I've played with the idea of changing the name of the practice, but I really do love the 90% small ruminant case load and that I can be quickly recognized as somewhat of an area small ruminant expert; even though it's a long name I think it has some recognizability at this point and keeping it helps reflect my continued priority of serving small ruminant producers.

I just think it's SO FUNNY how this winter I barely got to use my BHB ketone meter because it was always way too cold (even kept in controlled temps, by the time you pull blood stall side - too cold). And now that we're into fall lambing, it's complaining that it's too hot.
😭😭😭

Stay safe out there, y'all. This unrelenting hot weather is hard on everybody.

I'm seeing good fall calving herds struggle because cows were too heat stressed to put down good quality colostrum over the last month.
I'm seeing sheep that aren't getting the nutrient intake they need in late gestation because it's too hot for them to want to eat enough.
And for most dairy goat folks we are just starting breeding season. Heat stress takes a significant toll on reproduction.
Not to mention all the usual challenges we see with heat stress and temp swings.

So just take a look at some strategies you can take to keep everybody cool and set up for a successful season. 🌡️

It's been about a year since I made a purchase I now can't imagine life without. "The Vet Shed" as we all call it here.

Primary goal was somewhere climate controlled for drug storage off the truck. But it serves so many more roles. Lab space for embryo transfers, fecals, PCV/TP. A quiet office space for studying new procedures, recording podcasts, editing the website. I've performed multiple emergency C-sections while my young kids were still asleep in the house. A place I can keep so organized that even if I'm out of town, I can tell a client exactly where they can find a medication.

It's taken a lot of work to get it to what it is today. I'm not the most handy so it also took a lot of time! But it's been a huge blessing and it really puts in perspective why very few people are strictly mobile. 😅 I will continue to be primarily mobile but now I always encourage folks to haul in sheep and goats when they can to save on farm call fees and allow me to be more efficient with my time.
