Happy Pride Month! 🌈 In honor of the rainbow, June's Bird of the Month is the Australian Rainbow Lorikeet! You can find these charismatic parrots in Lorikeet Adventure, and guests have the opportunity to feed these colorful birds right out of their hand. This experience is available daily!

🍏Diet
These lorikeets forage on the flowers of shrubs or trees to harvest nectar or pollen. They will also eat fruits, seeds, and some insects!

🌳Habitat
Common habitats include rainforests and woodlands, and they can also adapt to urban environments that have a wide range of trees.

🪹Nesting
A clutch contains 1–3 eggs and incubates for 25 days. Eggs are laid on chewed, decayed wood, usually in a hollow tree limb.

💡Did you know?
The parents are mostly monogamous and remain paired for long periods, if not for life!

Our last Waterfowl Wednesday post featured the Common Goldeneye! Did you know there is another species of Goldeneye? Here we have the Barrow's Goldeneye.

Although seen less often that the Common Goldeneye, both species can be seen in Utah in the winter. One way to tell the two species apart is to look at the shape of the white patch on their face. Barrow's Goldeneye have a crescent-shaped white spot and Common Goldeneye, have a much more common shape...a circle!

Over the past couple of years, Arcia Tecun, UVU Adjunct Professor, has partnered with UVU students and Tribal Nations in creating a welcome sign and map which includes Newe (Shoshone; Goshute) names for places, mammals, birds, and fish. It can now be seen over at the Nature Center at Pia Okwai campus! ✨

This poster was created in the hopes of amplifying Indigenous ecological knowledge, and we are honored to support the creation of this map. Check out our new maps now available for purchase in our Nature Store!

To learn more about how this project came to be, please read our Bird Tweets blog here: https://loom.ly/08yX5nA 💻

The girls are back at it again! 💅

Our four female Metallic Starlings are fabulous nest builders that build one intricate nest together. This year, they have started work on a new nest not too far away from their previous one! 🌳

These are woven nests, so no simple task as they weave in and out to craft their roost. On your next visit to Treasures of the Rainforest, be on the lookout for these skilled weavers building their new nest! 🪹
