Let’s talk about Pannus.

Pannus, also known as Chronic Superficial Keratitis, is an immune-mediated inflammatory corneal disease. It’s commonly seen in German Shepherds, but also seen in Border Collies, Labrador Retrievers, and Greyhounds. This disease appears as blood vessel and brown pigment growth over the dog’s corneas, and can progress to cover the entire cornea causing vision impairment. The good news is that it is treatable! We commonly use an immunomodulatory eye drop called Tacrolimus for treatment, accompanied by a steroid drop. We may also inject the eye with a steroid to directly attack the inflammation and replace the use of the steroid drop.

Now that we’ve learned what Pannus is, let’s meet Bella! Bella is a long term patient of Dr. Knollinger’s, being treated for Pannus. What makes Bella unique is that she is an Australian Shepherd, which is not a typical breed we see for pannus. Her disease has been severe but with treatment she is comfortable, visual, and happy!

Meet Marvin, he's been a long term patient of Dr. Disney, being treated for Uveodermatologic syndrome. This is an autoimmune disease that can cause permanent blindness.
In Marvin's case, you'd never even know he's blind! He still runs around and chases his best friend Scooter (like in this video) and lives life like a happy normal dog.
Blindness can be challenging but many still have a great quality of life and adjust well. Learning to cope with a blind dog takes patience and dedication, but Marvin's owner has done amazing with the challenge!
