Did You Know the Actual Rules for Dogs on Patios in Salt Lake?

"Dogs welcome" signs don't always mean what you think they mean.

There's a real permitting process behind them - and only 49 restaurants in Salt Lake County are actually approved for it this year. Here's what's really going on, and a rule that trips up almost everyone. πŸ‘‡

Utah's state health code generally keeps pets out of restaurant eating areas, for the same food-safety reasons you'd expect. But local health departments can grant exceptions and those are the approved patios!

Getting approved takes real effort on the restaurant's part: a written safety plan, an inspection, and a few physical requirements - like a separate outdoor entrance so dogs don't have to walk through the indoor dining room.

There are rules for us as dog owners too, and one of them trips people up every time:
πŸ• Dogs must stay on-leash
πŸͺͺ Collar with current license and rabies tag required
🚫 No dogs on tables or chairs
πŸ’§ Water only in a disposable container - yep, no food or treats allowed on the patio (we know, we know - it surprises us too and feels a little restrictive)
πŸ™… Restaurant staff aren't allowed to touch your dog

So next time you're picking a patio for you and your dog, now you know what's actually happening behind that "dogs welcome" sign - and which rule you're probably breaking without realizing it. (Who doesn't want a treat?!)

Want to check if your favorite spot made the official list? Salt Lake County keeps it updated here: https://www.saltlakecounty.gov/health/food-protection/dog-patio/

Which one of these rules surprised you most?

Keep your pup safe by knowing the signs of Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs)! If water looks suspicious, stay safe and stay out.

Bookmark habs.utah.gov and check water quality before you head out this summer.

Welp... everything is on fire. Here's how smoke/air quality can impact your dog!

Snowbasin in Ogden opens this weekend! One of our favorite summer activities is heading up for their dog friendly Blues & Brews concert series. Your $29 gondola ticket gets you in the door and up the mountain!

We love Willow Creek Dog Pond! This fully fenced pond in Park City features nearly an acre of swimming space and a dock for jumping. Such a fantastic spot for cooling off in the summer!

We capped off our morning with brunch on Hearth and Hill's dog friendly patio. 🍳
