Helping pet owners understand tear staining just got a little easier!

We created an easy-to-print educational handout that explains what tear staining is, what can contribute to it, and helpful ways to manage it.

Print it, share it with your clients, and give pet owners a resource they can reference at home!

Did you know?

Dogs have a field of view of about 240°, compared to roughly 180° in humans. This wider field of vision allows dogs to detect movement from the sides more easily and helps them stay aware of their surroundings.

Did you know?

Newborn puppies and kittens are born with underdeveloped vision. Their eyes are typically closed at birth, and even after they open, their vision continues to develop over the following weeks as their eyes mature.

Those early weeks are an important part of growth, helping young pets gradually learn to explore and interact with the world around them.

Have you noticed that some dogs seem to have tear stains more often than others?

While tear staining can affect any dog, it's often more noticeable in certain breeds and dogs with light-colored coats. Factors like facial structure, tear drainage, and coat color can all play a role.

Did you know?

Indolent ulcers (also called SCCEDs) are not typically infected ulcers. In many cases, the real issue is that the corneal epithelium isn't properly attaching to the underlying cornea, preventing normal healing.

Because the problem is structural—not infectious—medication alone is often not enough to resolve the ulcer.

Treatment may require procedures such as:
✅ Debridement
✅ Diamond burr keratotomy
✅ Grid keratotomy

These techniques help encourage the epithelium to reattach and promote proper corneal healing.

If your pet has a non-healing corneal ulcer, a veterinary can help determine the most appropriate treatment plan.
