The Secretary’s Pages: A rundown of the AKC’s official business, including the July Board Meeting and proposed revisions to the PBGV standard;

This month’s feature stories and Gazette Gallery slideshow revolve around the theme “What They Were Breed For.” We explore how a breed’s original function influences the work of breeders and judges;

Videos: Dogwood Cluster; World Dog Show; Building Better Dog Shows; AKC Diving Dogs Team Challenge; George Alston seminar; Family Dog Photo Contest;

And Luke Ehricht gets the Dog People treatment.

On Our Cover: This issue’s theme is proclaimed by our cover image: a brace of burly Gordon Setters built for a hard day’s work on rugged terrain.
About the Charles Olivier de Penne’s watercolor, from AKC Museum of the Dog curator Alan Fausel: “Now, regularly referred to as Gordon Setters, in the 19th century, especially in France, they would be Black and Tans. “Although de Penne is primarily remembered for his hounds, there are the occasional pointers or setters that inhabit his works. A similar brace of Black and Tan setters appears in paintings among his works, making one believe they are the same pair.”
