And even more kittens needing homes….. They are approximately 7 weeks of age. They have tested negative for FELV/FIV, have had their first set of vaccines and are spayed and neutered. The torti is female and the black is male.
Please let us know if you’re interested in adding these kiddos to your household and would like to meet them. We always recommend adopting more than one kitten so they have each other to play with and not make you crazy. 😀

**RABIES ALERT**
A bat discovered inside Carver Hall on the UMES campus in Princess Anne, MD has tested positive for rabies.

The bat was collected and submitted to the Maryland State Laboratory for testing on Tuesday, August 25 and positive test results were received Wednesday, August 26, 2026.

Once infected, rabies is a virus that has a 100% fatality rate when left untreated in mammals, including humans.

The Somerset County Health Department reminds everyone to take the following precautions to protect yourself and your family from possible exposure to rabies:
- Report any sick or strange acting wildlife.
- Vaccinate pets and livestock. Maryland law requires that all dogs, cats and ferrets be vaccinated against rabies by four months of age. Vaccinating your domestic animal not only provides protection for the animal, but vaccinated pets act as a barrier to keep the rabies virus from spreading between wild animals and people.
- Do not feed wildlife or stray animals and discourage them from seeking food near your home.
- Do not approach an unknown animal, either wild or domestic, especially if it is acting in a strange or unusual manner.
- Keep garbage cans tightly covered and avoid storing any food outside.
- Instruct children to tell an adult immediately if they were bitten or scratched by any animal.
- If an unvaccinated pet comes in contact with rabid or suspected rabies the pet must be quarantined for four months.
- Vaccinated pets that come in contact with rabid or suspected rabid animals must be given a booster rabies vaccination within five days of the contact.

All animal bites or scratches should be reported to the Somerset County Health Department at 443-523-1700 during business hours (Monday - Friday, 8am to 5pm) and 443-859-4419 after hours.

Happy Friday! This a case we have shared before but it is worth sharing again. Penny was a very sweet Dachshund that was dropped off to Dr. Giza because the owner was being admitted into a nursing facility. The owner did not remember if she had fed Penny or not throughout the day and just continued to feed her so this sweet girl had to be carried into the veterinary office at 50 lb and yes that is 50 lb. She could not walk because her poor little feet barely reached the ground. She was immediately put on a diet and lost 15 lb in 2 months (the difference between the 2 pics) so we don't want to hear that you cannot get the weight off your pets. You are absolutely able to do it. Penny got down to 19 lb (a loss of 29 lb.) which is where she should have been and Dr. Giza had to do a skin reduction surgery on her to get rid of all that excess skin after she had lost the weight. She lived a wonderful life with the Giza crew. So remember, your pets cannot open the pantry door or the refrigerator door, it is up to you to get the weight off and help them live their best lives!

ALL 3 HAVE BEEN ADOPTED BUT WE HAVE 2 MORE THAT WILL UP FOR ADOPTION THIS WEEK! So we have 3 kittens looking for their forever homes! How are they even still available? The are so sweet! They are approximately 4 months of age. They have tested negative for FELV/FIV and are neutered. They have received their core vaccines.
