Rowan County Animal Shelter We believe a safer world starts with kindness. Our mission is to protect the vulnerable—both animals and people—with compassion as our compass.

The Rowan County Animal Shelter is an open admission, municipal shelter committed to protecting animals while working to promote a harmonious atmosphere between the animals and residents of our county. Over the years our Shelter has strived to become more adoption friendly and inclusive of the community who supports us. We have gone from averaging 35 adoptions a month in 2010, to saving the lives of more than 3,000 animals in 2020. The Animal Shelter and all of its staff are very proud of the progress that has been made and know that none of it would be possible without the hard work and dedication of our caring citizens.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: TEMPORARY CAT BUILDING CLOSURE

Rowan County Animal Services recently confirmed cases of feline panleukopenia, a highly contagious virus that can cause serious illness in cats, particularly kittens.

The situation began with a kitten that appeared healthy when it arrived at the shelter but was likely already carrying the virus before developing symptoms. After the initial case was identified, additional kittens have since tested positive for the virus.

Because feline panleukopenia can spread before symptoms appear, our team immediately implemented enhanced monitoring, cleaning, and disease-control protocols. Due to the virus's incubation period and the potential for exposure within the cat building, we are temporarily closing our cat areas while staff continue to monitor animals and follow veterinary guidance.

🐱 CAT ADOPTIONS & INTAKE
All cat adoptions and non-emergency feline intakes remain temporarily suspended. We will continue accepting emergency cases involving injuries, severe illness, and rabies/quarantine situations.

🐶 OCTOBER 24 ADOPTION EVENT UPDATE
Our upcoming adoption event will continue for dogs only! Dog adoptions and other dog-related operations remain unaffected. We look forward to hosting a special cat adoption event once it is safe to resume normal cat operations.

The health and safety of our shelter animals remains our highest priority. We appreciate the community's patience, understanding, and support as we take these necessary precautions and work to provide the best possible care for the cats and kittens.

A152458 Bonnie - MEDICAL FOSTER NEEDED!

URGENT MEDICAL FOSTER NEEDED FOR BONNIE!

Meet adorable little Bonnie. This sweet girl was brought to our shelter with injuries most likely sustained after being hit by a car. She is unable to put weight on her right rear leg, and we are also concerned she may have an injury to her ribs.

While we are managing her pain as best we can, we are not equipped to provide the further diagnostics and veterinary care Bonnie desperately needs. She needs to be seen by an outside veterinarian ASAP to determine the extent of her injuries and what treatment she will need.

And here’s the thing about Bonnie, despite everything she may be going through, she is still the sweetest, most lovable little girl who wants to play.

WE NEED A MEDICAL FOSTER TO STEP UP NOW!

Bright and early this morning,10 more cats headed out to be spayed and neutered! 🐱

A big thank you to Dr. Welch, her team at Community Pets Mobile Veterinary Clinic, and the Rowan Neuter Scooter volunteers for making this possible! We also appreciate our Animal Services employees who came in extra early to transfer and transport the cats.

It takes teamwork to make a difference! Spaying and neutering helps reduce pet overpopulation and prevent unwanted litters, giving more animals a better future. 🐾❤️

**We're also looking for an additional veterinarian to join our team!** With our current veterinarian focused on caring for incoming sick and injured animals, we're hoping to add another veterinarian to help us provide in-house spay and neuter services. If you know someone who might be interested, send them our way!

🐾 Oreo Is Looking for Her Perfect Match! 🐾

Sweet Oreo is back and searching for a new home to call her own! 💗 Oreo is a high-energy girl who loves life and sometimes has a little more excitement than her surroundings can handle. She was returned because her energy level proved to be too much for the child in her previous home, resulting in the child being knocked down accidentally. Through no fault of her own, Oreo is looking for a family that understands her energy and is ready to help her thrive.
Oreo deserves a home where she can run, play, burn off that extra energy, and be loved for the lively girl she is!💕 If you're looking for an active companion to share life's adventures with, Oreo might just be your girl. She simply needs the right fit to help her shine! ❤️
