The Salisbury Zoo would like to send a huge thank you to Dr. Anne Weigt, DVM, DACVO !

Dr. Weigt, a veterinary ophthalmologist (specialist eye doctor) with Dogs and Cats Emergency and Specialty Hospital in Bowie, MD, came to the zoo on May 8th to evaluate several of our animals. Dr. Weigt has worked with our zoo for several years and has helped evaluate and care for multiple animals over that time.

During her visit, Dr. Weigt performed eye surgery on our female AMERICAN RED WOLF, Skyrae. Skyrae came to us with entropion of her lower left eyelid. Entropion is a condition where the eyelid has too much skin and rolls inward toward the eye. This can cause discomfort and, in severe cases, damage to the eye itself.

Skyrae’s condition was initially mild and carefully monitored by our animal care team, but over time it became clear that it was causing her discomfort, especially during the spring and summer months. Dr. Weigt performed a procedure similar to a small eye lift to remove the extra skin. We are happy to report that Skyrae has healed beautifully and should be much more comfortable moving forward!

While at the zoo, Dr. Weigt also examined several other residents with chronic ocular conditions that we continue to manage, including:

🦅 Sam, our elderly Bald Eagle
🦉 Renfield, our ambassador Great Horned Owl (Dr. Weigt also performed her cataract surgery back in 2014!)
🦅 Margo, our ambassador Broad-winged Hawk

Partnering with local and regional veterinary specialists is incredibly important to ensuring we can provide the very best veterinary care for the animals in our care. We are extremely fortunate to have developed relationships with so many wonderful specialists over the years, and Dr. Weigt is certainly one of them.

Thank you, Dr. Weigt, for your continued expertise, compassion, and dedication to animal care!

🎉 Happy 1st Birthday to Clint! 🎉

Our Green Aracari, Clint, recently celebrated his first birthday and received some fun birthday enrichment to help mark the occasion! (Check out the photos!)

Green Aracaris are the smallest members of the toucan family and are native to the tropical forests of South America. These colorful birds use their large bills to help reach fruit on branches, regulate body temperature, and even toss food into the air before eating it!

We’re so happy to celebrate Clint’s first year with us and can’t wait to watch him continue to grow and explore! Be sure to wish him a happy birthday in the comments! 🎉

Cats are fantastic hunters, designed to catch prey and use their strong jaws to pull meat from bones. At the Salisbury Zoo, we offer our animals enrichment opportunities that replicate their natural environments and behaviors.

Our Canada Lynx and Ocelot are given bones weekly as part of their regular diet. Providing bones is not only enriching, but also beneficial to their health. Chewing on bones can help scrape tartar from their teeth, while pulling meat from the bones helps strengthen their neck and jaw muscles.

We would like to say a big thank you to Family Butcher Shop for generously donating these bones for our cats to enjoy!

It’s almost time! Ales for the Animals is BACK next week at Burnish Beer Co.!

This isn’t just a night out , it’s a chance to turn a simple pint into real impact. Every drink helps support the animals at the Salisbury Zoo, along with vital education programs and conservation work that reaches far beyond the zoo gates.

So while you’re enjoying local craft brews and great conversation you’re also helping care for animals, inspire learning, and protect wildlife.

We’ll see you there for a night that proves small choices can make a big impact.
