The Salisbury Zoo would like to send a huge thank you to Dr. Anne Weigt, DVM, DACVO !
Dr. Weigt, a veterinary ophthalmologist (specialist eye doctor) with Dogs and Cats Emergency and Specialty Hospital in Bowie, MD, came to the zoo on May 8th to evaluate several of our animals. Dr. Weigt has worked with our zoo for several years and has helped evaluate and care for multiple animals over that time.
During her visit, Dr. Weigt performed eye surgery on our female AMERICAN RED WOLF, Skyrae. Skyrae came to us with entropion of her lower left eyelid. Entropion is a condition where the eyelid has too much skin and rolls inward toward the eye. This can cause discomfort and, in severe cases, damage to the eye itself.
Skyrae’s condition was initially mild and carefully monitored by our animal care team, but over time it became clear that it was causing her discomfort, especially during the spring and summer months. Dr. Weigt performed a procedure similar to a small eye lift to remove the extra skin. We are happy to report that Skyrae has healed beautifully and should be much more comfortable moving forward!
While at the zoo, Dr. Weigt also examined several other residents with chronic ocular conditions that we continue to manage, including:
🦅 Sam, our elderly Bald Eagle
🦉 Renfield, our ambassador Great Horned Owl (Dr. Weigt also performed her cataract surgery back in 2014!)
🦅 Margo, our ambassador Broad-winged Hawk
Partnering with local and regional veterinary specialists is incredibly important to ensuring we can provide the very best veterinary care for the animals in our care. We are extremely fortunate to have developed relationships with so many wonderful specialists over the years, and Dr. Weigt is certainly one of them.
Thank you, Dr. Weigt, for your continued expertise, compassion, and dedication to animal care!
