Since our inception in 1992, MRFRS has assisted over 130,000 cats — placing over 22,800 cats and kittens into homes, spaying or neutering over 14,000 feral cats at our TNR clinics, and over 65,000 cats on our Catmobile. OUR PROGRAMS:
• Adoption Center for surrendered stray and owned cats
• Catmobile (mobile clinic offering low-cost cat spay/neuter)
• Feral spay/neuter clinics at MSPCA Nevins Farm

conducted by MRFRS volunteers
• TNR support (trap rental and instruction)
• Care for Life (adoption program for feline leukemia positive cats and cats with other chronic health issues, with lifetime coverage of associated vet care costs)
• Foster care program
• Feline Assistance Resources and Support (subsidized veterinary care for low-income cat owners)
• Captain Courageous Fund (assists caretakers of free-roaming cats)
• Bridge Program (provides emergency boarding for cats whose owners are in perilous circumstances)
• Low-cost vaccination & microchipping clinics for cats and dogs

September is Happy Cat Month! 🐱🎉 And what better way to celebrate than with some fun Did You Know? facts about our fascinating feline friends?

👅 DID YOU KNOW? Your Cat’s Tongue Is an Amazing Cooling System!

Ever wondered why your cat’s tongue feels so rough? Those tiny, prickly bumps are called papillae, and they’re much more than a built-in grooming comb!

Researchers discovered that these tiny spines are actually hollow, scoop-shaped structures that collect saliva with every lick and deliver it deep into your cat’s fur—right down to the skin.

As that saliva evaporates, it can cool the skin by as much as 30°F! And this amazing feature isn’t unique to house cats. The same type of papillae was found in feline species ranging from domestic cats to tigers.

And grooming does even more! Your cat’s tongue helps:
✨ Remove loose fur, dirt, and dead skin
✨ Prevent mats and tangles
✨ Stimulate circulation
✨ Distribute natural oils throughout the coat
