DOES YOUR HORSE HAVE CUSHING'S?

Pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID), formerly known as equine Cushing’s disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder in horses. This means the pituitary gland can’t keep bodily functions in a healthy working state, resulting in a variety of clinical signs. PPID is also associated with several serious conditions, including laminitis, secondary infections and insulin dysregulation.

We suggest administering fall immunizations in advance of cool weather. In the fall, we typically recommend vaccinating for Flu/Rhino and Rabies, but please talk with your veterinarian about which vaccines are appropriate for your horse at this time. It’s also a great time for f***l egg counts and deworming, which are required by most colic insurance programs. When we vaccinate your horse, we also do a brief, complimentary physical and oral exam.

Steinbeck Peninsula Equine Clinics’ own Dr. Lauren Winfield, and her husband Travis Mahoney, APF (Accredited Professional Farrier), have been breeding Dutch Warmbloods since 2020, when they launched MW Sporthorses, LLC. (MW is for “Mahoney” and “Winfield”).

Lauren got the ball rolling in 2013, when she acquired Coco Chanel, who became the dam and granddam of most of the MW foals to follow. Kalifornia Girl, Coco Chanel’s first foal, went on to become an accomplished Prix St. George contender.

Since MW began to produce foals, several have been presented at the Hanford KWPN inspection (known as a keuring), a prestigious annual horse evaluation event hosted at DG Bar Ranch in Hanford, CA. Organized by the KWPN-NA (Royal Dutch Sport Horse registry in North America), Hanford is one of the premier North American stops. Official inspectors travel from the Netherlands to grade the horses in several classes, both in-hand and under saddle. This year’s MW foals include:

⭐️ Warden MW out of Nyx MW by Cum Laude, born in March, achieved a 2nd Premium (in the top 6-40%) rating, which is very respectable for a c**t that will likely go on to become more Jumper than Dressage horse.

⭐️ Winston MW was born in April. When his dam Essina was having health issues, Lauren’s sister, Steinbeck Peninsula Equine Clinic Director of Internal Medicine Dr. Laramie Winfield and the whole staff helped make the foaling process safe and effortless. While he was not shown at Hanford this year, he will likely become a solid Eventer, with half Show Jumper and half Dressage lines.

⭐️ Wonder Woman MW, resulting from an embryo transfer from Coco Chanel by Velantis, was born near the end of April. She achieved a coveted 1st Premium rating (top 5%) at Hanford!

⭐️ Wayland MW, born July 1st, out of Coco Chanel by Kaiman, also achieved 1st Premium, scoring exceptionally high marks for movement.

OEPS (the Opportunities in Equine Practice Seminar) is the leading student forum in equine veterinary medicine. The seminar’s career management format offers practice and financial management information for the student and opportunities for practitioners to establish long-term mentoring relationships with the approximately 300 veterinary students attending.

Please help us congratulate Dr. Kayla Dykstra, who recently earned her CERPV (Certification in Equine Rehabilitation and Performance Horse Medicine), an advanced credential reflecting evidence-based, integrative approaches to improving equine soundness, recovery, and athletic performance. Through this program, Dr. Dystra has deepened her expertise in areas such as:

* Rehabilitation protocols for injury recovery

* Performance optimization for sport horses

* Pain management and mobility improvement

Additionally, Dr. Dykstra is certified in Equine Acupuncture (cVA), and along with her interested in equine sports medicine, her professional interests include emergency medicine and equine reproduction — her favorite time of year is foaling season!

Kayla was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, where she spent time riding in multiple disciplines. During her summers, she spent her time working on a horse and cattle ranch, leading and organizing a summer riding camp, along with general ranch and herd management. She grew up with a love of all horses and disciplines.

Basketball brought Kayla to the University of Victoria for her undergraduate degree, where she played for the University of Victoria Vikes basketball program while completing a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology with a minor in Neuropsychology. She returned home to Calgary to complete her degree in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Calgary.

Kayla has an interest in 3-Day Eventing, participating in the sport both as a competitor and as an on-site veterinarian for shows, helping clients and horses with short term medical care. She likes spending time at home with her mini horse Chewbacca (“Chewy“), with her dogs Jac and Newt, and with her husband Mike. When not doing horse-related activities, she also enjoys reading, baking and cake decorating.

With today's shortage of qualified equine veterinarians, we must continue to encourage gifted students to pursue careers in equine practice and equip them with practical information for launching successful careers.

The Opportunities in Equine Practice Seminar (OEPS) is the leading student forum in equine veterinary medicine, with over 4,100 students attending since its founding by Dr. Bill Rood and the Rood & Riddle Foundation in 2003. The seminar’s career management format offers practice and financial management information for the student and opportunities for practitioners to establish long-term mentoring relationships with the approximately 300 veterinary students attending.

Through OEPS sponsorships, travel and hotel funding are provided for third-year veterinary students to attend the meeting, where they receive information about various avenues and disciplines of equine practice, financial remuneration, employment, practice ownership, and marketing. Students gain valuable information through face-to-face encounters in the Practice Exhibit Hall and presentations from practitioners, financial advisors, and practice management consultants.
