Steinbeck Peninsula Equine Veterinary Assistant Brooke Bosinger had her work cut out for her at a recent vaccine clinic at Garrod Farms () where she and Dr. Hailey Everett vaccinated 50 horses!

If your horses, ponies, minis, donkeys, and mules have not yet had their 2026 Spring Vaccines, don't forget that the barn, ranch, or paddock that "jabs" together can get their call fee waived. Vaccine time is also a great time to take care of other wellness care tasks such as routine bloodwork and a f***l egg count.

Check out this video with Dr. Zoe Davidson to learn how to properly put standing wraps on your horse!

Used primarily when a horse is stabled or while trailering, standing wraps can provide support, reduce fluid buildup ("stocking up"), and protect legs from injury. Applied from just below the knee/hock to the fetlock, they may be used after intense work, for shipping, or to keep bandages or poultices in place. Proper application of the standing wrap takes practice. A loose standing wrap, one that’s too tight, or a lumpy application can injure your horse.

Farrier “films” are digital radiographs (x-rays) of your horse’s feet that your veterinarian shares with your farrier, so they need not rely on external hoof shape alone for accurate trimming and shoeing. Learn more about farrier films at:
https://www.steinbeckpeninsulaequine.com/post/farrier-films

When it comes to keeping your horse sound, we believe balancing all four feet is key to peak performance and comfort. So, when you get farrier films of your horse’s front feet, we’ll x-ray the hind feet for free.*

*Promotion applies when images of all 4 feet are taken at a single appointment. Offer good through the end of 2026.

Baby goats are mighty cute, and some people might say you can never have too many … But baby Buck’s humans decided they have just the right number in their little herd, so a surgical team from Steinbeck Peninsula Equine Clinics, including Dr. Nick Carlson, Dr. Shane Halbleib, and RVT Maddie Scott, was called out to perform a field castration. That’s Buck’s sister sitting pretty on Maddie’s shoulders, while her brother recovers, looking rather pleased with herself for being a girl goat!

Please welcome Marlee Mayfield to the Steinbeck Peninsula Equine Clinics team!

Marlee is a Santa Cruz native. While she was growing up, her family had horses and other animals. She began riding when she was just four years old and has always ridden Western. Marlee says, “Ever since I was a little girl, I have known that working with animals was what I wanted to do.”

As a recent high school graduate, Marlee is one of our youngest Veterinary Assistants. She initially attended Soquel High School and later transferred to an alternative high school and concurrently took classes at Cabrillo College to better support her academic growth. Marlee plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree and hopefully attend veterinary school. She wants to become an equine veterinarian because, “Being surrounded by horses and other animals from such a young age sparked a deep passion in me that has only grown over time. I truly believe that all animals are amazing and incredibly healing, and I would love the opportunity to care for them, support their health, and give back to the animals that have given me so much joy.”

When not working, Marlee thrives on being active, being outside, and making the most out of life, while spending time with her family, her friends, and her boyfriend. She loves being outdoors and enjoys watching sunsets and sunrises, going camping, riding dirt bikes, hanging out at the lake or the beach and, of course, riding horses.
