As festival season kicks off—hello Blossom Festival weekend! 🌸—we love seeing pets included in the fun. But busy events like parades, craft fairs, and crowded gatherings can be overwhelming (and sometimes risky) for our dogs. Here are a few things to keep in mind to protect both their physical health and mental wellness:

🐾 Respiratory Illness Risk
Large groups of dogs increase exposure to contagious respiratory diseases (like kennel cough and canine influenza). Make sure your dog is up to date on vaccines and avoid nose-to-nose contact with unfamiliar dogs.

🐾 Overstimulation & Anxiety
Loud noises, crowds, and constant activity can cause significant stress. Signs include panting, pacing, tucked tail, whining, or trying to escape. Not every dog enjoys these environments—and that’s okay.

🐾 Dog Fights & Reactive Behavior
Even normally friendly dogs can react unpredictably in crowded, high-stress situations. Keep dogs leashed, give space, and avoid tight encounters with unfamiliar pets.

🐾 Risk of Bites (to Dogs & People)
An anxious or overstimulated dog is more likely to bite—whether it’s another dog or a well-meaning stranger reaching out to pet them. Always advocate for your dog’s space.

🐾 Heat, Hydration & Fatigue
Events can last hours. Bring water, take breaks, and watch for signs of overheating or exhaustion.

🐾 Know When to Sit It Out
If your dog is anxious, reactive, very young, elderly, or immunocompromised, they may be much happier staying home in a calm, familiar environment.

At the end of the day, the goal is for everyone—pets included—to have a safe and positive experience. When in doubt, it’s always okay to enjoy the event without your dog.
