This is Isaac. He is one of the four comfort dogs who arrived in Bend, Oregon over the weekend following the latest school shooting. As soon as the devastating news broke, he packed his bags and traveled to Silver Rail Elementary. He spent time at the school and in the surrounding neighborhood providing support to children, first responders and community members. In the wake of such senseless violence and loss, he is doing his best to provide a brief source of happiness. 15/10 (follow LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs)

Spooky season has arrived! Here are some tips to help keep your pet safe during the Halloween festivities:

Halloween Treats Are Not for Pets ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿซ
* Keep holiday treats and candies out of your pet's reach.
* Unsweetened, dark, bittersweet and baking chocolate can be toxic to pets. If your dog eats chocolate, call your veterinarian or an animal poison control center, as treatment may need to be rendered immediately. Symptoms of toxicity include excitement, nervousness, trembling, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst or urination, muscle spasms and seizures.
* Keep gum, candy or breath mints containing the sweetener xylitol away from your pets. When a pet eats even a small amount of xylitol, it causes a surge of insulin, and the animal's blood sugar may drop quickly and dangerously.

Decorations Are Potential Tricks ๐Ÿ•ธ๐ŸŽƒ
* Halloween decorations such as fake cobwebs should be kept out of reach of pets.
* Glow sticks can be hazardous if chewed or ingested, causing mouth pain and irritation, as well as profuse drooling and foaming at the mouth.
* Light strands, loose wires and electric cords can be a serious hazard to your pet, especially puppies, who may chew them.
* Never leave candles, such as those in jack-o-lanterns, unattendedโ€”especially around puppies and kittens.
* Never allow your pets to eat a leftover jack-o-lantern, as a rotted, moldy pumpkin can make them seriously ill.

Meet Obi-Wan Kenobi

This sweet 12-week-old pup has only been with his owner for a week, but Obi has already stolen his heart. A couple with four children approached his owner downtown, said they didn't have time to care for the puppy, and asked if he wanted to give Obi a home. He said yes.

Early this morning, Obi began vomiting and became extremely lethargic. His owner doesn't have much, but he was determined to do whatever he could to help his puppy. A community member from HOAP reached out to us and one of our partner rescues, and together we pulled together enough funds to get Obi seen tonight at Salem Veterinary Emergency Clinic.

The total cost of treatment is still unknown. Obi's vaccine history is unknown too. Tonight, Obi needs medical care and a chance to grow up healthy. If you're able to support his emergency care, we would be so grateful. Every dollar helps.

Today is Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿพ โ€” a day to honor and remember the beloved pets who have touched our lives and crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

While we reflect on those animals we've loved and lost, weโ€™re also taking a moment to share our heartfelt gratitude for Heavenly Wings Pet Cremation.

For more than 20 years, this local, family-owned business has lovingly provided cremation services for the kitties in our care who have passed away โ€” completely free of charge.

Their generosity has been an incredible gift to Friends of Felines and shows that Heavenly Wings is more than a business; they are a compassionate community partner who helps ensure

that every animal they receive is treated with dignity, love, and respect as they make their way over the Rainbow Bridge.

We are so grateful for all they do and are honored to have them as part of our Friends of Felines family. โค๏ธ

* ๐Ÿบ Alcohol: Alcohol contains ethanol, which dogs cannot process safely. Even small amounts can cause vomiting, weakness, poor coordination, dangerously low blood sugar, breathing problems, coma, or even death.
* ๐Ÿง… Onions: Onions contain compounds that can damage a dogโ€™s red blood cells, potentially causing anemia. Raw, cooked, powdered, or dehydrated onions can all be harmful.
* ๐Ÿ‡ Grapes: Grapes and raisins can cause sudden kidney injury in dogs. The toxic amount is unpredictable, so any ingestion should be taken seriously.
* โ˜• Coffee: Coffee contains caffeine, which can overstimulate a dogโ€™s nervous and cardiovascular systems. It may cause restlessness, vomiting, abnormal heart rhythms, tremors, seizures, and potentially death.
* ๐Ÿฅœ Nuts: Not all nuts are toxic, but certain nuts especially macadamia nuts can poison dogs. Macadamias can cause weakness, vomiting, tremors, and difficulty walking. Nuts can also pose choking or intestinal obstruction risks.
* ๐Ÿฅ‘ Avocado: Avocado contains persin, which can be harmful to some animals. Dogs are generally more resistant than certain other species, but the pit, skin, and large amounts of avocado can still be dangerous, particularly because the pit can cause an intestinal blockage.
* ๐Ÿซ Chocolate: Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which dogs metabolize much more slowly than people. Dark chocolate and baking chocolate are especially dangerous and can cause vomiting, abnormal heart rhythms, tremors, seizures, and death.
* ๐Ÿฌ Sugar-free gum: Many sugar-free gums contain xylitol, an extremely dangerous sweetener for dogs. It can cause a rapid drop in blood sugar and potentially severe liver damage. Even a small amount can be an emergency.
* ๐Ÿง„ Garlic: Garlic, like onions, can damage red blood cells and cause anemia. Garlic can be harmful whether it is raw, cooked, dried, or used as a seasoning.

โš ๏ธ Important: If a dog eats any of these foodsโ€”especially grapes/raisins, xylitol-containing gum, chocolate, macadamia nuts, or a large amount of onion/garlicโ€”contact a veterinarian or pet poison service promptly rather than waiting for symptoms.

Unfortunately, there are several wildfires burning in Oregon. Here are some suggestions on monitoring your animals for wildfire smoke irritation. Animals that have cardiovascular or respiratory disease are at increased risk during periods of poor air quality and should be watched closely. If you have concerns about your animal's health, please consult your veterinarian.
