🐾We've received reports of several recent coyote attacks in our area. 🐾

This time of year, young coyotes are learning to hunt, and adult coyotes are especially protective of their pups. Even pets in fenced yards can be at risk.

Please keep your dogs on a leash and avoid allowing pets (cats and dogs) to roam, especially at dawn and dusk.

A little extra caution can go a long way in keeping your furry family members safe. ❤️🐾

🥵 The Heat Is On! Keep Your Pets Safe During This Heat Wave ☀️🐾

While we're reaching for fans and cold drinks, our pets are relying on us to help them stay cool. Hot weather can become dangerous much faster than many people realize.

🌡️ Know the signs of heat stroke:
• Excessive panting
• Bright red or pale gums
• Drooling
• Weakness or difficulty walking
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Confusion or collapse

🚨 Heat stroke is a medical emergency. If you think your pet is overheating, move them to a cool area immediately, offer small amounts of cool (not ice-cold) water, wet them with cool water, and seek veterinary care right away. Don't wait to see if they improve.

🐾 Protect those paws!
If the pavement feels too hot for the back of your hand for 7 seconds, it's too hot for your pet's paw pads. Asphalt and concrete can reach temperatures high enough to cause painful burns, even when the air temperature doesn't seem extreme.

💙 Heat safety tips:
✅ Walk early in the morning or after the sun goes down.
✅ Keep plenty of fresh water available at all times.
✅ Choose shady routes and grassy areas whenever possible.
✅ Never leave your pet in a parked car—even for a few minutes or with the windows cracked.
✅ Limit exercise on hot, humid days, especially for puppies, senior pets, overweight pets, and flat-faced breeds like Bulldogs, Pugs, and French Bulldogs.

When in doubt, it's always safer to skip the walk and enjoy some indoor playtime instead.

Stay cool, stay hydrated, and give your furry family members a few extra belly rubs from all of us at Atlantic Veterinary Hospital! ❤️🐶🐱

Meet Jenny 💕

Jenny is a 9-year-old sweetheart weighing about 25 pounds who is looking for a loving forever home. She is fully vaccinated, loves to cuddle, and enjoys her walks very much!

Jenny recently lost her beloved elderly owner, so she has been through a lot of change and transition. Because of this, she can feel anxious when left alone. With routine, reassurance, patience, and lots of love, she settles in beautifully. She would thrive in a home where someone is around more often, and she may even do well with another dog for companionship. Otherwise, she may bark when left alone.

She is truly a loving little “sweetie pie” who deserves a calm, caring home where she can feel safe and loved again.

Please call Andrea Bunde at 978-505-7835 if you know someone who may be interested in adopting Jenny. Thank you for helping this special girl find her perfect home! 🐾

🐾 Fear Free Friday Spotlight: Floyd 🐾

Meet Floyd, a 6 ½-year-old Boxer with a big heart and a strong instinct to protect his people 💙

Floyd finds the veterinary office pretty scary, and he takes his job of watching over mom and dad very seriously. To help set him up for success, he comes in with Gabapentin, Trazodone, and Acepromazine on board.

At his most recent visit, we learned something really helpful: when Floyd’s parents step out of the room, he’s much less reactive. Without that added pressure to protect, he’s able to stay more neutral and work through the visit with us.

With this approach, we were able to:
✔️ Draw blood
✔️ Complete a full physical exam
✔️ Administer 3 vaccines

—all without him spiraling or becoming overwhelmed 🙌

Floyd is also a great example of a dog who benefits from a muzzle. While some dogs find muzzles stressful, Floyd actually finds it calming—it gives him a sense of structure and helps him settle.

Every pet responds differently, and Floyd reminds us how important it is to meet each patient where they’re at and adjust our approach based on what they need.

Way to go, Floyd! 🐶✨

🎉🐾 Fear Free Pet of the Week: GABBY! 🐾🎉

Gabby came in for her “not-so-glamorous but very important” a**l gland expression and handled it like an absolute pro 💅

Her winning combo?
✨ Trazodone
✨ A quiet, cozy exam room
✨ Mom snuggles
✨ And, of course… spray cheese (the real MVP)

Gabby made it very clear: spray cheese is for before and after the procedure… not during. A girl has standards. 😌

With two technicians working together with Gabby's mom, Gabby stayed calm, comfortable, and totally in control of the vibe.

And here’s a little Fear Free insight:
Muzzles can be a great tool and actually help some dogs feel more secure—but for others, they can cause more stress. Gabby told us loud and clear she preferred the “no muzzle, more cheese” approach, and we listened!

Every pet is different, and we love tailoring each visit to what makes them feel safest and happiest 💕

Way to go, Gabby—you crushed it! 🧀🐶💖

🐾 Fear Free Star of the Week: Tuukka! 🐾

Let’s hear it for Tuukka, our 3 ½-year-old Rottweiler rockstar! ⭐️

With the help of his Fear Free plan—including Gabapentin, Acepromazine, and Melatonin—Tuukka has been making amazing progress during his visits. But what really makes his story special is the dedication happening at home. 💛

His parents have put in so much time and effort working on muzzle training and desensitization, helping Tuukka feel more comfortable and confident every step of the way. That kind of commitment makes all the difference—and it shows!

Tuukka handled his visit like a champ, and we couldn’t be prouder. 🙌

👏 Gold stars all around for this incredible team effort!
