Raven Hollow Farrier Services LLC Casey is a professional farrier and graduate of Mission Farrier School. She specializes in barefoot Casey graduate of Mission Farrier School.

She has a passion for horses and their well being and believes that you don't have a horse unless you have their hooves. Horse feet aren't magically fixed in one cycle.

Horse feet also are not fixed without good husbandry by the horse owner, a decent farrier, and quality barn management.

Today was the first time I was truly thrilled with this horse's feet after a heck of a battle with white line disease. She required multiple resections, constant cleaning of her stall and the hoof, along with topical applications.

But guess what...

We did it!!!!!!!

Hey strangers!! Long time, no update! But I'm here to chat with you all about a little something-something on my mind.

MUD! MUD SEASON! RAIN! SWAMPS! WOO HOO SPRING!

Alright, time to get serious. A few key points to help me, you, and your horse out as we stroll into the smushy, New England Spring weather:

PLEASE have your horse inside early to let their legs and feet dry off!
- This isn't about me wanting to stay clean (though, come on, I really don't want your horses muddy legs wrapped around my jeans...)
- This is because that mud and swamp kills my tools. And my tools are... more $$ than I care to admit. (Rasps are about $40 each, my knives are close to $100, and honestly thats a *cheap* knife, my nippers over $270!!)
- This is because I simply can't do as quality a job with a wet foot as I can with a dry foot. Wet hooves slide on my hoof stand. Wet feet are more difficult to clearly evaluate the solar surface. Wet feet jam my rasp up when I top dress, making it look like a rat chewed your horse's feet.
You're paying me the same price for a wet, muddy horse as you do for a clean, dry horse, and getting only a fraction of the bang for your buck. Clean. Dry. Feet and legs please! It helps us ALL.

- If I haven't told you yet, here I am saying it now, PREVENTATIVE THRUSH TREATMENTS!!! Treat your horse with Thrushbuster, Durasole, Groom's Hand, >>I don't really care what brand thrush treatment you use as long as you use it

Attn Clients:

I am incredibly behind. I am working to sort out scheduling, but expect things to be "messy" the next week or two regarding scheduling.

Between
- the extreme temps (seriously, we all know how brutal it has been)
- getting sick (the joys of kids in your house)
- vacation (while being sick)
- coming home to clear snow (still while being sick and caring for kids)
- deciding to cave and go to urgent care after 12 days of not feeling good (to find out you have a sinus infection 🤦‍♀️)
- followed by a fricken blizzard (we really ticked off mother nature)
And being a single human running my business:

I am trying.

If your horse is in dire need, please message me so I can sort out scheduling accordingly.

If your horse can wait, also message because ill probably cry tears of joy for your patience!

Gentle reminder to my clients to please locate their lost shoes from field! While it does help ME out, getting those shoes from the fields is the safest thing we can do for our four legged friends ❤️

It's been a hot bit since I have posted.

For those who don't know, i had massive wrist surgery, recovered, found out I was pregnant, grew a human inside me, gave birth to said human, used my body to keep that human alive, and here we are.

A year and a half after the last event, and i am finally feeling great.

So anyway, here's a beautiful saddlebred mare i get the honors to trim. She was so terrified of farriers when I met her- and I wish I knew why. I couldn't even wear my chaps around her when I first began trimming her.

Now?

Now we have an agreement, a conversation, and an understanding of expectations. I never hit her, but I certainly have corrected her by moving her feet. She had veterinary care. She had training....

Now....?

I can do her solo, and it is so peaceful.

Horses react for a reason. It sometimes takes a team to sort out the reason- but seldom, if ever, do horses react for no reason at all.

Listen to your horses. They're just trying to communicate❤️

Your friendly reminder that I am still here, and I still see you, and I know if you've been sleeping, I know if you're awake, I know if you've treated thrush or not, so treat it for goodness sake!!!

I am so annoyed hearing, "I've been treating the thrush, but it's not improving!!" So let's ask: have you REALLY been treating it?

Sure. There are a lot of factors here. They include, but are not limited to, turnout/environment, bedding, diet, workload, the weather, maybe even the stars aligning right. But at the end if it all, it comes down to your time and efforts.

Let's keep in mind that thrush is an infection. Thrush can cause *lameness/pain*. Lameness/pain can cause *behavioral issues*. It's not just a "smelly" thing. It's much bigger than that.

Moving on!!!

I did not see the this horse when his thrush was so bad it was bleeding. However, the first two pictures were a few days after my client began treating the horse... you know, when she bought him, got him home and picked his feet, and they bled during routine hoof picking.

I shod the horse for the first time shortly after the July pictures were taken.

I gave her my suggestions as to how to treat this level of thrush. It was her time. **Daily** time. I should really ask my client how much time this consumed daily, and then over all: I'm sure it was several hours over a few weeks. It was materials (topicals, soaks, vet wrap, duct tape. Probably coffee... Maybe not enough coffee 🤔)

And if I had to guess: it was frustrating.

Anyway. Here we are. 2nd shoeing with me now, and I literally was using a TORCH to get through the hooves because they were so hard (this is why my knife work looks shady. I am fairly confident whittling a statue from concrete with my knife would have been easier than getting through his feet today!!)

Don't tell me "you've been treating the thrush" when you haven't taken my professional advice. And if, IF you have, and if, IF it's not improving: it's time to get the veterinarian involved. Yes. Get your veterinarian involved!!!! Antibiotics could very likely be needed if there is no improvement.

I want to go get a trophy for this client for her efforts... but I think the positive changes we have seen in her horse's behavior and hooves is probably enough of an accolade for her ♥️

I want to wish my clients, friends, and colleagues a happy Deerfield Fair season! I hope those horses who will be showing and staying on the fair grounds are as happy and settled in as this big guy, Bolt, already is!!!

(And c'mon, I know Bolt is no stranger to my page, but how can I NOT share this adorable stuff with you all!? He's so happy in his fluffy stall and cozy blanket!!)

Well, appearantly talking pony wordrobes is a big hit, and Alice once again pulled through- LITERALLY (ha ha, see what I did there?)

PULL ON BELLBOOTS. There is an easier way to get them on and off, and your horse can actually HELP you!!

Alice and Frog were kind enough to demonstrate and explain the how-to's of something many of us struggle with.

Most of the time I see ill-fitting bellboots. So what makes them fit versus being too small!?

A well fitting bellboot should......cover the back of the shoe completely..ideally touch the ground

A poorly fitting bellboot looks like Miss Piggy wearing a miniskirt 🤣 we don't want to see that!

Also, there's a nice picture of the magical double layer bellboot for those extra spunky, tricky ponies who really like to test how much effort it takes to remove a shoe.

I've been meaning to post this for way too long. One of my awesome friends/clients did a little fashion show on her horse, so huge thanks to Alice and Frog!!!!
