Apparently force free trainers:
- don’t let dogs off leash
- don’t let them run
- don’t let them play
- avoid anything that creates too much excitement
- take away their freedom and everything dogs love to do on a deep and innate level
- And when all that fails, we put them in a “medical straitjacket” before euthanizing them. 🤯

Well… somebody forgot to tell the dogs! 😆

My dogs run. They wrestle. They chase. They sniff. They explore. They get dirty. They make choices. They have outlets for being dogs. We teach them skills so they can safely have MORE freedom, not less.
We simply choose to teach those skills without intentionally using fear, pain, or discomfort to get the behavior we want.

And then there’s that training clip… 👀

So often we hear how prong collars are providing “clear communication,” and that the dogs don’t mind them.
I don’t know about you, but I certainly didn’t see a dog that was having a good time or understanding what was being asked of them.

I’ll stick with capturing, luring, shaping, and reinforcing the behavior I want. Turns out, you can communicate pretty clearly without making discomfort part of the conversation.

I really appreciate all the love and support I’ve been receiving, and everyone reaching out to check up on me. I’ve been feeling very self conscious about how I look from the facial paralysis and haven’t wanted others to see me. I decided to do a video anyways to share my experience and what I’ve been dealing with with the hopes of providing a little education around Ramsay Hunt Syndrome, and to encourage others to take steps to help protect themselves against this happening to them.
Anyone who has had chicken pox has had the varicella zoster virus, and after chickenpox clears, that virus can remain dormant in nerve tissue for life. Years later it can reactivate as shingles. When it reactivates in or near certain facial/ear nerves it can cause Ramsay Hunt Syndrome.
This has been an absolutely terrible experience so far. I strongly suggest considering getting the shingles vaccine as a way to help reduce the risk of this ever happening to you.

It’s a myth that harnesses cause pulling. It’s also a myth that you need a slip lead, e-collar, or prong collar to teach loose leash walking.
A dog that pulls on the lead is not being stubborn or dominant. They are being a dog and doing what works. In general, dogs naturally walk faster than us. Asking them to slow down means you want them to impede their natiral gait. I think it’s only fair we teach them that with patience, clarity, and kindness. It’s also highly likely that at some point in their lives they learned that pulling could get them what they wanted. Whether it was to that really exciting smell, or to that dog or person they wanted to greet. Maybe it gets them out the door quicker, or to a tasty snack.
Instead of focusing on punishing the behaviors that you don’t want, focus instead on setting your dog up for success, and reinforcing the behaviors you’d like to see more of.
