WEโRE CALLING THE โNO-KILLโ MOVEMENTโS BLUFF.
We cannot tell you how many messages we get that say:
๐ฌ โ๐ฟ๐ค ๐ฎ๐ค๐ช ๐ ๐ฃ๐ค๐ฌ ๐ ๐ฃ๐ค-๐ ๐๐ก๐ก ๐จ๐๐๐ก๐ฉ๐๐ง?โ
๐ฌโ๐๐จ ๐ฉ๐๐๐จ ๐ ๐ฃ๐ค-๐ ๐๐ก๐ก ๐จ๐๐๐ก๐ฉ๐๐ง?โ

Somewhere along the way, people started believing โno-killโ automatically means compassionate, while euthanasia automatically means cruel.

A shelter can protect its โno-killโ status by limiting intake and saying no when it is full.
An open-admission shelter doesnโt have that luxury.

They get the sick cat.

The injured dog.
โ
The unwanted litter.
โ
The animal dumped at the door because somebody decided it was no longer convenient.

Thatโs not an honest comparison.
โAnd simply keeping an animal alive is not automatically humane.

An animal can also leave alive and later be neglected, bred, chained, dumped, returned or passed from home to home.
None of that shows up in the shiny โno-killโ statistic.

Now, letโs be very clear:
When a healthy, adoptable animal is euthanized simply because there is nowhere for it to go, that is heartbreaking.
It ๐จ๐๐ค๐ช๐ก๐ ๐๐ค๐ฉ๐๐๐ง ๐ช๐จ.
But our outrage needs to travel a little farther upstream.
That animal didnโt appear in an overcrowded shelter because shelter staff woke up one morning and decided they needed more animals to euthanize.
It got there because somewhere along the way:
โSomeone didnโt spay or neuter.
โSomeone allowed another litter to be born.
โSomeone dumped an animal.
โSomeone treated a living thing as disposable.
And collectively, we keep expecting shelters and rescues to somehow absorb an endless supply of animals without an endless supply of adopters, fosters, funding, kennel space and human beings to care for them.
The shelter didnโt create the crisis. It was left holding the consequences.
We work primarily with free-roaming cats and we volunteer closely enough with our local shelter to see what happens when prevention is ignored and the shelter is expected to clean up afterward.
โผ๏ธYou cannot rescue your way out of unchecked breeding.
โผ๏ธYou cannot adopt your way out of it.
โผ๏ธAnd ๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ต๐ผ๐๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ฎ๐ป๐ถ๐บ๐ฎ๐น๐ ๐ถ๐ป๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ณ๐ถ๐ป๐ถ๐๐ฒ๐น๐ ๐๐ผ ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ผ๐ป๐ฒ ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ป ๐ณ๐ฒ๐ฒ๐น ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ฎ๐ฏ๐ผ๐๐ ๐ฎ ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ฎ๐ด๐ฒ ๐ผ๐ฟ ๐ถ๐บ๐ฎ๐ด๐ถ๐ป๐ฒ ๐ถ๐๐ปโ๐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฎ๐ป๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ฒ๐ถ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ฟ.
Of course we want animals leaving shelters alive.
But โaliveโ should be the ๐๐๐๐๐ฃ๐ฃ๐๐ฃ๐ of the standard not the entirety of it.
Instead of obsessing over whether a shelter has a โno-killโ label, we need to ask the question that actually matters:
What are we, as a community, doing to stop creating more animals than our community can responsibly care for?
๐๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐๐๐ฒ โ๐ป๐ผ-๐ธ๐ถ๐น๐นโ ๐ถ๐ ๐ฎ ๐๐๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐๐๐ถ๐ฐ.

We can keep arguing over which shelter has the prettier percentage.
๐๐ผOR we can spay and neuter our animals, support affordable access to those services, foster, adopt responsibly, stop dumping animals and start addressing the problem before an animal ever reaches a shelter door.
That may not fit neatly on a bumper sticker.
But it would save a hell of a lot more lives.
